Im surprised at how many people I know that lose power, some have a generator, some dont. They tell me that they can't cook with there oven. I always say I have a wood stove, and a gas grill, now most don't have a wood stove, but all have a grill! They seem to forget about the gas grill, so just remember if u lose power, and need to cook use your grill. Lol,

Jay,
I saw a quick segment on TV this morning about someone who took a Shopping cart, put some trash wood in the basket and flipped the back panal up over it and was cooking dogs on it.
Must-A Been one of us Rednecks living in the City.

That is an awesome idea!!

If you have a gas cook stove with electronic ignition, you just need a match.

What's this the twilight zone?? Same post from
2 different guys? Lol. I dident see that one.

We don't have gas here, just woodstove, and electric oven, if power goes out I start generator but it's not wired to oven/stove.

The second post starts with a quote of the previous .

In 76 we had a huge ice storm here in mich we lost power for 8 days. MY folks had an "all electric" kitchen. we muddled along with a Coleman stove while the neighbors merrily cooked and baked away with nat gas. The first thing that went was the cook top. Pitched for a gas one!!

I work for the power company, during large storms people are suddenly helpless without electricity. Same people who are "outdoorsy" and are out hiking and camping all summer suddenly can't cook without electricity. Many people can't get out of their garage because the door opener won't open the door for them. The food in their fridge is spoiling, it 's twenty degrees outside set your milk on the porch. They can't make a phone call because they bought fancy cordless phones and threw the old corded ones away. The meat in the chest freezer is getting soft because they open it every five minutes to check on it. I could go on..............

We don't have a generator, we do have a gas heating stove in the basement, it doesn't need any electricity. It won't keep the house warm, but will keep pipes from freezing. I have a lp gas grill, a coleman stove and a small LP construction heater. We know how to disconnect the garage door opener from the door and open it manually. We live in town so we have city water. losing power is an inconvenience. Surprisingly the power up here in the Northwoods doesn't go off as often as places like Tampa Florida or Lansing Michigan.

Don't use the gas grill in the house. There is always somebody either burning the place down or gassing themselves to death.

Not a problem if you have a big enough generator. I've got one that would run the dairy barn. Not a problem to run everything in the house, including the electric water heater and submersible well pump. I never hear the pitch change, even with just a small tractor on it.

I, like Randy have a 14kw , actually an alternator, and run it off one of the tractors. It runs the shop, and house. This one doesn't make lines on the TV like the old one I had. Runs the central air, or furnace, and shower so I can stand to live with myself. Best thing I bought.

SEIREMC is now offering home backup generators as part of their load management system. I intend to learn more about it as more info becomes available.

As I was reading this thread, I thought of the same storm. I'm east of saginaw, north of lapeer. Our power was out 2 weeks. Wood stove for heat and to cook. Oil lamps for light. Carried water from the pond for 20 head of cattle. That lasted 2 days then dad opened the gate and let them get it themselves. Loaded the freezer up and took it to friends who had electic.
