Renting Implements?

Something I've seen just barely touched on in some of these forums: The rental of 3-point implements. I need a disk-harrow. But I don't need it for more than a week. I've never seen any 3-point implements for rent in any of the rental places I've been. How would I find something like this in my area? I know there are farmers near me (one of them even leaves his disk harrow out by the road - but I don't know him, so hesitant to ask to borrow - and it looks a little too big for my tractor), and they've got corn and cotton all over the place (everything I can see from the roads seems to be less than a couple hundred acres, but there are plots everywhere)...
[b:f801bbbf06]TL;DR[/b:f801bbbf06]: Where can I find a disk harrow to rent?

I have thought of that too.
I would like to rent a box blade for 2 hours and then return it. But I dont want to spend $600 to buy it. I will only use it 1 time per year at the most.
I could make my own, PITA however.

If I was you get in good with the farmer and maybe offer some money to use it for a while.
A bunch of buddies of mine that all live within a 10 mile radius have all different rear 3 pt implements, but it is hard to transport the stuff.

I too have had the need for a certain piece for a short time. What I find nobody will rent or lend a 3pt piece because some jackwacker/cracker head used it tore it all to hell and dropped it off and didn't even say thanks. I have made it a practice to watch for tore up 3pt stuff that can be fixed and buy it for cheap and sit on it.

Pay a visit to any of your local farm machinery dealers. Just about any of them would be happy (I would think) to make a little money from renting a piece of equipment rather than having it just set there on the lot.

Rusty " As a twent eight year dealer I think you will be suprised. Several things come into play with a dealer renting implments. If they are new you can,t get enought to offset the guy buying new saying it,s been used. Now lets say you have a disk sitting there worth 2 thousand. Half day rent guy ,n not going to want to pay more than a few bucks. Can,t get enough money to offset the chances of having it torn up or missing a sale. At least it never worked for me. We have a free standing rental yard but do not rent many implments. Box blades, tillers IF you rent a tractor .

Welcome to farming.

Spending big money on an implement you use a couple of weeks a year.

Gary

A good box blade is a lot more than $600. The light duty ones will bend like a pretzel if you hook onto something.

That's where over a period of time you watch sale bills or check ads otherwise. Then you can be the owner and rent/loan it to others.

You need get some friends in the farming community, and when you borrow or rent something return it in better condition than when you got it.

I rented a Brillion seeder from a farmer that only knew me by the usual country wave from driving past my place. I asked my neighboring farmer if he knew anyone with a Brillion and he told me about the farmer that does the drive by. I called him on the phone and he agreed to rent it to me. I borrowed a trailer to haul it.
Don't be shy, get to know your neighbors.

The one local NH dealer rents a lot of attachments, skid steer and 3 point.

Has saved me a few bucks over the years.

Well - I needed a dirt scoop to do some waterways and a dry dam. Borrowed it from a farmer in the neighborhood, brought it home to him at the agreed time, made some repairs to it while I had it - in other words - it went home in better shape that when I got it. Then later when he needed help sorting/doctoring cattle, I spent the day helping him to return the favor. Maybe you could offer to trade some labor for the use of the disk?

Us that DO own our own equipment have all been DOWN that road..(letting a neighbor borrow a pice of equipment....
There will NOT be a day Cold enough in He??, that I will loan a piece of equipment...
You need it..?? You BUY your own & tear IT up..not mine...BTDT...
Own the T-Shirt, too...

A lot of guys won't lend or rent an implement out for obvious reasons.
Heck, they don't even know if you know how to use it correctly.
On the other hand, if they're you're neighbor, ask them if they'll rent it,
lend it, OR if you can hire them to come do it.
If its just a little job and close, many may just do it for you to be "neighborly".
Don't forget to return that favor!

Not a lot of loaning around here... Can rent a tractor (with loader) usually, but implements? Not so much. Can sometimes go halves on implements with friends/neighbors/family to cut costs though (especially on stuff like rollers and scrapers and stuff). Too much "borrowed" stuff comes back torn up or dirty. Heck, I won't loan out tools because I know the odds of them coming back are slim. However, sometimes a good neighbor will come over and do work for you with their equipment for a short job...

I would rather go over and do the job for someone than loan out the equipment. I usually have to repair things after they come back from loans.

YUP! thats the price you pay to play. If you can"t justify owning it, it may be better to pay someone to do it for you. Sucks, but thats the way it is.

It's a shame that farmers can't form co-ops where they buy seldom used equipment then rent it back to themselves.
I usualy tell a person that a tire, bearing or something seems to be going bad then ask if it happens while they are useing it,do they feel it's thier responsibility to make the repair. Sometimes it's actualy true and sometimes fabercation on my part. The question causes some to look for some place where they don't have to risk skin in the game. Those that say shure I'll fix anything that breaks seem to take better care of things they borrow. I wish someone would loan me every thing I need with that aggrement. Better to have repair expense only rather than purchase expense and repair both.

Having worked for an equipment rental company a couple of years I can understand why not. Most people are not bad; but even 1 in 10 can do enough damage to totally absorb the rental money from 10 people. Just as an example... One person rented a post hole digger, Max HP 50. Claimed he was going to use a JD 2150. The boss passed by the place, & saw it on a CIH magnum (130+hp). He stopped & conficated it immediately, didnt refund the money, & told him never to come in the store again! Thats just one example, I know many more! By the way the auger broke 2 rentals later on a AC WD45. Boss said I know that didnt brake it!!!

I wonder that all the time here, but I guess when you have to get stuff done with the weather you can't afford to wait on someone else to finish with a piece. I have what I need to take care of my needs. Just need a bigger harrow now and then and a back blade that is heavier than what I have for a couple hours a year, and a bigger mulcher a couple times. Those I borrow from a local guy because I can afford to flex to his needs and I return them with a a bottle of Jim Beam.... Works out just fine...

Keep your eye open for a good deal on a used one and then buy it. You can then use it and when done sell it for what you paid or even make a little ?

Semi trailers, shop equipment, lawn mowers, service manuals, three point equipment, vehicles, money..... Rent or loan out??

I have a little book I could write on my losses...

I like to be neighborly, but too often my stuff comes back damaged, if it comes back at all....

One guy stiffed me for $1600 on semi-trailer rent.. After I located the trailer, there was over $2500 in damages to repair...

One piece of equipment loaned out over 25 years ago is still due for a promised return.

A pressure washer was loaned out, only for the loaner to loan in to another guy... Got that one back with a broken pump after it was left in a unheated building..

Don"t mention tow chains or loaning to relatives..

I am more than glad to help folks out... But in most cases; would rather run over and do the job for them.. Or simply say no.

I don't lend stuff out! The guys I know mostly own what they need or hire it done. The few who want to barrow stuff are cowboys with equipment. Family I'll come do it for you. Someone I like I'll do it if they buy the gas. After that I start a 50 and hour and go up from there depening on what equipment. Bush hogging, 50 an hour. Backhoe, 75. If I have to wonder if I'll get paid I don't do it!
