Lunch and drinks are packed. Tomo is opeing day for bird season. My two grandboys (ages 7 & nearly 6)will skip school tomo and we'll see what's out there. Last year we didn't see a bird but spent the day working the woods/fields, sit down on a log for lunch and just good time together. I think I am more excited then they are! MO Dept of conservation says mild winter and warm dry spring have been good for the Quail. We'll see. This will be the first hunt for my new Golden Retriever too. He was 1 year old on 10/22.

That sounds like a totally great way to spend the day and it will be a time your grandsons will never forget.

Some of my best memories of my dad are the many times we went out on a November or December day, following his two pointers. It was always a bit amazing and funny how startling it was when that covey flushed up in front of those dogs: you knew the birds were there and you knew what they were going to do, but they still almost produced a heart attack. As I type this I'm looking at my dad's "bird gun"---a sawed-off 12 ga. Savage, Browning patent, WWII military surplus. I've seen him get as many as four birds on one covey rise with that gun.

But, no more of that for me---I haven't heard a bobwhite whistle around here for 30 years or more. Fire ants and coyotes have killed off all ground-nesting birds.

I have a covey that comes though the yard in the morning will have to put feed out for then soon. It's sometimes around 50 and sometimes around 15 or 20. Fun just to watch and let my mouth water thinking about the old day at home on the Ranch near Loomis, CA.

Love hunting quail!!! My friend in Oklahoma invited me down a couple of years ago. What a blast!! Would have had a double on the covey rise but forgot I had double triggers. We have a few scattered around Michigan, but pretty scarce.

If you are interested in quail and habitat improvements, check out the MO DNR's "Covey Headquarters." Lots of good information. Since quail and rabbits seek similar cover, I've improved my rabbitat as well.

24 yrs ago, when James & I married, there were quail at the farm. They've been gone for a long time.

I've asked about them and biggest factor is loss of habitat. Fire ants, wild hogs and coyotes have also contributed.
