Bale Wagon Pictures

In response to an earlier request on 'Bale Trailers', I took some pictures of my wagons and have included them.

The wagon bodies are made from I-beams from a construction job on I95. They were guard rail posts and were removed for the duration of the road work. Then the contractor replaced the guardrail with new ones. I scrounged some of the posts and welded them to beams made from an old school bus chassis and steel pole braces scrounged from the electric company. Total cost was about $50 in welding rod. One word of caution- if you try something like this, with galvanized material, DO IT OUTSIDE!!! The fumes are toxic....

You are right, the fumes from galvanizing are very toxic. But if you feel sick from it just drink a bunch of milk, it is an antidote to the toxins and you will feel better right away.

This is the type of cheapo bale trailer we use a lot over here in Northern Ireland. Some are factory manufactured, but this one belongs to my neighbour and is simply made from the front axle of a Volvo truck with the steering bar welded up solid. It carries 6 bales.....4 in front of the axle and 2 behind. the side tubes are close enough together so as our rear mounted tractor lifter will set the bales on and drop down past the side tubes. The tubes on the rear mount lifter then fold up hydraulicly so you can hitch up to the same tractor and haul the load home. Once home the lifter will then lift the bales off again. As I use the front loader to lift the bales, I am thinking of making a similar trailer but with and extra cradle above the axle to take an extra 2 bales. Remember we haul grren chopped bales already wrapped in plastic on these trailers and each bale weighs nearly a tonne.

When I haul silage bales, I only load eight on each wagon. With dry hay, eleven. But I am also usually haling them in tandem. The JD gear has an extended drawbar on the rear.

Nice to know. Got dreadful sick once when a friend asked me to weld the exhaust on his truck. Didn"t think about galvanized. Dove under his truck with the mig an fixed it. Missed prom with a really great girl cuz I was so sick. At least I know now some 15 years later!!! Hahaha!!

I have the tractor set up with a double spike on the front so I can carry two bales at a time and a forklift type three point carrier on the rear so I can handle three bales in a field when bringing them to the wagons. It saves a lot of time. The only time I have to climb off the tractor is to rehitch.
