Do either of you know anything about a company called solar city around here? My neighbor had them put panels on his roof, it's a 20 year lease, they maintain it. The cost was $2600 one time fee,Goverment pays the rest. he says his electric bill is $15 a month so far, they told him government allows you to only make 20 % more electric than u need?? Any info about this company? Thanks

Jay,
I can't comment on the good or bad of Solar City.
Here is how the lease program works. They the Leasor buys, installs, and hopefully maintains all the equipment on your site. THEY receive all the NYSERDA, and Fed. Tax deductions, as they own the equipment. The owner pays a Monthly Fee deternined by them, for the equipment, similar to what Telmark Leasing (Agway) did with farm equipment back in the 80s-90s.
The reason for the 120% max. (used to be 110%) is because if you and some neighbors are powered by a "spur line" and if a group of users in this "spur Line" start producing large amounts of power that is being fed back to the grid, the spur line could cause an overload back feed situation all the way down the spur and posibly further down the main line, causing mechanical transmission problems.

Thanks for the info, my brother who lives next door to me and next to the said neighbor, is looking into it. My brother lives in the middle is what I'm saying, and they are on a different line than me.

I don't know anything about Solar City but I doubt the $15 per month claim. I own all my own solar equipment and I pay $17 per month just to be hooked to the grid so I can sell back. If any equipment fails - I have to pay for it. In the case of a lease like Solar City - they have to pay for repairs. Not sure how they'd make money if not getting paid anything. That is - unless there is huge incentive going in their pockets from the government. I have a 6000 watt system and make 110-120% of usage per year. I am also a low consumption user. So, a typical "high" user in dark areas of NY woud need a 10,000-12,000 watt system . That's big.
