just got a farmall m which has a distributor hydraulic pump and a 3-point --problem the cam gear broke taking the idler gear out also --i have been told that if the pressure is set to high that the cam gear can not handle it is this the cause or anything else i should look for any ideas welcome

Yes if the pressure relief is set to high or no relief it can be the cause. Or the tractor could have the early type gear that was not as strong.
After 60 years or so the best way to know the gear type is to look at the number on it. If not in to many pieces the weakest gear ended with a suffix after the number of D. Stronger ones are DA and DB suffix. Also make sure the gear didn't get loose on the cam and key or the nut wasn't loose. Another thing that can break them is a bolt thats to long installed in the bottom mounting hole of the pump nearest the engine. block

Later gears for the super m are thicker and can handle the strains the hyd pump puts on them. Check the archives its been covered quite a few times. Good luck on getting it back together.
