Got a 2000 GMC jimmy with push button 4x4. When you push the button to activate either 4 Lo OR 4 Hi, the little indicator light flashes. Doesn"t seem to engage the 4 wheel drive. What are possible causes? Thanks!

There's an electric motor on the transfer case that shifts it. Make sure the power is getting to it. More often than not that motor is bad. Google the problem and you should be able to find step by step procedures to trouble shoot it properly.

BTDT - possibly the switch itself. Also check the control module behind the kick panel on the passenger side. Mine was corroded where the wire harness connected to the module, due to water leaking from a windshield leak. Control module may have failed also... Very expensive if available. Also check wiring underneath the car going to the actuators. Mine was damaged from rubbing against other components.

Also try to shift into 4HI or 4LO in neutral, the t/case may be hung up just a little. Haven't seen a module bad yet as Ray mentioned, but have seen quite a few switches and motors.

As I type that, something tells me the next one will be the module. Also you can have corrosion on the motor connector too. If you take your time and go part by part, you will find it.

Those things are the most high maintenance junk pipes GM ever built, I got one I drive to work. The switch and the motor are problems and the motor is hi priced. Can you hear the motor click or run when you shift it setting in neutral. If you can then see if the vacum actuator under the battery is pulling the cable to the frt axle, it's a hard spot to see. The vac to the frt axle goes through a 3 port switch on the left frt of the trans fer case. The vac switch can be a problem too but I think that usually causes the frt axle to stay engauged when you want to turn it off. Good luck

Had the same problem on an '03 Silverado. Read on a forum that the wiring on the switch on the dash needed to be re-soldered. Did that and no more problems.
