What to use on 4 acre hay field

I usually bush hog a 5 acre field in the fall just
to keep volunteers from becoming trees. Now I need
to mow and rake it for alittle hay (for goats). I
have a rake and plan on hauling it loose, no bales.
So what would be the cheapest way to mow it? I
don"t want to spend alot on equipment sense it"s
a small field I plan on mowing once in the fall.

If in good shape, a sickle mower will cut good. They can be had cheap and are cheap to maintain and take up very little shed space.

Sickle mowers will work IF the sickle is sharp and you learn how to turn corners without plugging. Good ledgerplates help also have the mower in time and lead on the mower bar are very important.

Look for a bush hog 205 or 305. They had removable side panels, that let you blow the hay out the side of the mower. You could always torch the side panel off'n yours. I cut hay for many years, that way, it cures faster than a sicklebar. I would also try to find an old dump rake, to collect the hay into rows or piles.

Saw the county folks with a BH with the back panel removed. Pretty slick but just chopped more. I "mowed" about 20 feet with a sickle mower and got a drum mower  .
If it's only 4 acres once a year, maybe have someone mow it and you concentrate on gathering. It'd also be a good time to cut some poles and learn to make hay stacks. That 4 acres is gonna make a bunch of loose hay.

Only cut the one side out, you need 1 side for proper vacuum, or suck, to pull up down grass. Wish I could remember which side, for sure, think it is the right side, as viewed from behind!

You should be able to find someone to do it on 50-50 shares. That would be about 100 smale bales for you. Would that be enough for the goats?

Thanks, I looked up a photo of one for sale on youtube and it was on the right side, now it"s time to get the side grinder out and go to work.
