Noise in front end

I know this isn"t a tractor but maybe someone has run into this......2008 PT Cruiser 42000 miles. I bought it with 11000 on it. There is a growling noise in the front end that I attributed to tire noise but new tires hasn"t changed it. It is gradually getting worse. Noise doesn"t change under load, it is the same in gear or out of gear.I"ve even been under it with the thing showing 60 on the speedo and can"t find it with a stethascope. It seems louder in the car that under it. I"m thinking it"s in the diff and was prepared to drop the pan and check the fluid but it looks and smells OK. The book say"s you never have to change the tranny oil so I stopped there. Any ideas? EGBinOR

drive down the road 30-35 and turn hard to the left for a bit and then to the right , the noise should go away when u turn one way or the other. Sounds like you have a bad wheel bearing in the front.

Was in a dinner on the way back from the farm one day this past spring and overheard a lady talking about a similar situation. Turned out to be the wheel bearings. Hope this helps.

A growling front end sound as you drive is most likely wheel bearings that are shot.Another poster said this as well..most likely by my experience

Is that out of gear setting still or coasting down the road? If just setting still it can't be the wheel bearing, would have to be moving for that. Same with the CV joints. If it does it either in or out of gear and setting still it would have to be tranny-diff. But if it only does it when moving either under power or coasting in netrual then bearing or CV joint.

Wheel bearings. Just replaced both sides on the front of a pt cruiser with 80,000 miles.

The passenger side bearing had collapsed.

I think your right. I had noticed that a hard left cut the noise way down while a hard right increased it. I neglected the wheel brg because when I jacked the car up and ran it up to 60 mph I put the stethascope right next to both front brgs and couldn"t pick up the noise. There was no load on the brgs and apparently thats why I couldn"t pick up the noise. I"ll let you all know the results... Thanks for the help! EGBinOR
