The parts manual is online at th JD web site. 1-800-522-7448 will obtain operator and service manuals. Don"t waste your time with IT manuals.
On occasion some books by the late JR Hobes and published by Green Magazine are a great source . Little giants is the name iirc.
The 420 has live hydraulics and if optioned with the 5 speed it may have the optional live pto.
 
The Two Cylinder Club will run a serial # trace to find the build date, shipping date, branch warehouse, possibly the destination and major options.
Try road gear with caution and hand onto the steering wheel. Odds are she will be a wobbling goblin. Everything from the steering wheel to wheel bearings are suspect. The set screw on the steering box is the 1st place to start.
 
The slant steering wheel was the design of the 1958-60 430 series JD tractors. This would not make it rarer. Now if it was a 320, it would be rare and expensive. The "V" series hi crops are a little pricey also.
