hog building fire

Last night my 31 year old farrowing-nursery building burnt up with 22 100# pigs inside looks like fire cause had to be electrical no fans were running only lights. I need to decide if any desire to rebuild or retire. My kidws grew up in this building watching baby pigs born and playing with these little pigs, these memories are great.Building was metal siding with 18x24 pit under nursery and flush gutter farrowing crates. Feed costs have me thinking maybe time to slow down , but I'm only 53 and still enjoy doing it.

If it was at all profitable AND you enjoy it, go for it! If you will have to go in debt with little or no hope of a financial pay back over the next 20 years walk away with fond memories.
At 53 you still probably have 20 years to go until you really will be able to or want to completely retire. Maybe more... Now may be the opportunity to redo and modernize so you CAN keep it going as you enter retirement age.

It might be a good time to just clean up the site, then just watch how the economic situation unfolds before you decide to get back into the game.

Who knows, the next few years might just be a repeat of this year? I've seen it happen.

that's tough to go through,...in 2003 my barn burnt and i lost 9 of my breeding goats, was there to see it burn and could only save 6 babies,..sorry about your loss...

One thing to think about. If you had it insured then the insurance company may just tell you that you have to rebuild or no payout. If the company has a history of buildings burning down, some questionable, then they may not do a payout if building is not replaced. And if that is the case then you may not be able to change the design of the building. Just a thought.

Thats a shame, the worst shame is you have to make the decision to rebuild or not, like you said the cost of feed really makes you stop and think about wanting to keep animals anymore. Good luck, with what ever you do!

Sorry for your loss, I know that's tough. Leroy had some good thoughts on insurance and rebuilding. I know you had to move some stuff around in order to remove the pigs, but keep in mind, if you did have insurance, don't clean up anything until the adjuster looks at it. Just a thought.
