Got a new computer with Windows 7 a few days ago. I've had XP for years.

I'm getting used to 7, but one thing I've noticed, I don't have a progress bar and the other usuals accross the bottom of the screen. Is it a mis-adjustment, or does 7 not have one?

My Windows 7 has the lower bar. My chrome start button is there along with Itunes and anti virus and Malwarebytes. Start button is on it too. Pull an icon down from the desktop and see if it sticks. I can turn the thing on and thats the end of my knowledge.

I've got XP Pro on two computers, Vista on one, and Windows 7 on two others. They all look pretty much the same so I assume it's all about the settings you choose.

One problem with Windows 7 is it will not run many older programs that worked fine with XP and Vista. Windows 7 Professional has a possible option of running older programs IF you've got special hardware on the motherboard. Windows Home Premium does not have that option.

I'm on a Windows 7 machine at the moment. What do you mean by progress bar? Task bar?

Right click your mouse somewhere on your desktop and look for the personalize menu. From there you'll be able to customize your desk top, task bar, etc.

Once get used to paying for all the updates on older programs you get to like windows seven it corrects itself if something goes wrong. I like that part. It always updating the programs which can drive you nuts but if on a large computer it will run very good. Don't scrimp on memory get all you can it needs it.

I have had windows 8 for about 6 months now as a beta version. XP is my main computer though.

Does the task bar show up when you run your mouse cursor down there?
If it does, right click the task bar while its visible and select properties.
When the Properties screen pops up, uncheck/clear the box next to "Auto hide the task bar".

Have you tried running those programs in compatibility mode? Right click the shortcut icon for the program, select Properties, click the Compatibility tab. I"m on Vista Ultimate, mine lists Compatibility options back to Windows 95.

It will not work with many older programs under Windows 7 "Home Premium" regardless of mode. If you have Windows 7 "Professional" and the correct motherboard - then these same programs will work in compatibility mode.

Windows 7 was mis-represented when called "Home Premium." I say that because it was cheapest stripped down version available and there is nothing "premium" about it. With Windows XP (home version) and Vista (home basic) - compatibility mode WOULD work with the program in question.

If you go to the Microsoft Website they explain the extra-cost version of Windows and special hardware needed to run many older programs.

How do you like Windows 8? Are there new features that might make it worth the $40 to update from Windows XP Pro to Windows 8?

Thanks!
