Manufacturer jacks

Has anyone ever owned a vehicle with a decent jack? Wife had a flat on her 07 Toyota, I jacked it up took the tire off and fixed it, but when I went to raise the car up the additional few inches needed for the inflated tire it slid forward off the jack. I was using the recommended jack point and was on level ground, using a 2x6 block under the jack since I was on the gravel drive. I have gone to keeping bottle jacks in my pickups, harder to use under the car, but between the junker jack and the bottle jack I got the tire on.

4X4 wheel chocks for the opposite corner tire. Jim

Cheap, Cheap, Cheap is what the car companies give you. I have had the scissor jack in the last 3 I have owned.
I also kept a bottle jack in my old truck.

Erik,

My wife has a 2001 Windstar van. A couple of years ago she had
a flat. I changed the flat and in the process of tugging the flat
wheel off the spindle, I wiggled the scissors jack just enough for
it to fold up like a cheap suit. Down went the car onto the loose
wheel.

Fortunately, I had a small floor jack in the pick-up that I drove to
get to where she was with the flat tire.

I couldn't believe how junky that jack was.

They are marginal on a flat surface - and a genuine risk on an uneven surface. Buy a better jack if you can find one.

I use a 3.25 Ton floor jack on our vehicles; haven't had a flat away from the shop in about 35 years - and hope that I never do.

time is near when most folks will not know how or
be able to change a flat. sadly, i fear that time
has come for me due to physical constraints. i
read recently that car manufacturers will no longer
place a spare tire and jack in passenger cars.
cars will either have run-flat tires or equipped
with fix-a-flat cans. by the way, due to my
physical limitations i now carry a can in my truck.

I try to keep a bottle of Jack around. Works for other things besides flat tires too.

Had a flat on my '97 Buick LeSabre a year ago....didn't even know if there was a jack in it. (bought it used) Dug out the jack and changed the tire. Actually it worked excellent.

I had to change a tire on my wifes 97 lesabre in January and the factory jack worked just fine. Wasn't as good as a floor jack but in a pinch it works fine.

"Decent jack" is an oxymoron. I always carried an old tripod screw jack in my work truck. That was before painted/plastic bumpers, of course.

One day I found a young lady and her preschool son alongside the road with a flat tire. Stopped to help her change it. It was about the worst looking tire I'd ever seen in use. I mildly scolded her about the trashy tire, and she said she was on the way to the tire shop for a new set. Car was on a rather steep shoulder, and there wasn't a level spot in sight, so she helped me hold the car from sliding sideways while I got the spare mounted. After we got the car back on the ground, she discovered that her son had locked the doors and her keys were in the switch. We tried everything to get the kid to unlock the door. No luck. Then he started crying and announced that he had to potty. Things went downhill pretty fast. We somehow got a door open, and when I left, she was taking him to the woods to clean him up. Car needed a cleaning, too. . .

At least it wasn't raining. . .

Heard new cars will come with a can of "Fix a Flat" instead of a spare tire. Guess then they won't need a jack either.

Did exactly the same as you on my 04 Ford Freestar. Obviously no improvements or upgrades in the jack department. Grant

I have an 01 Windstar have used the jack many times and all without problems. Excellent jack. Also have a Chrysler Sebring, excellent jack, no problems.
