OT-Dog Gone

Thursday, James was mowing close to the road. Our Basset hound, Bentley, went with him as usual. James noticed a car on the side of the road with its flashers on and another one apparently that had stopped to help.

When he got done mowing and headed back to the house, he didn't see Bentley. Bentley wasn't at the house either.

James got in the truck and drove along the road to see if Bentley had been hit. No Bentley.

Bentley was a very friendly dog. We think he went to investigate and those people took him.

That is a dog gone shame! Sorry to hear that. I know you haven't had him long. Some people will stoop to anything! But, who knows, he may find his way back, you hear of it happening. You didn't have him "chipped" by any chance did you?

That is too darn bad.

Have heard of people swiping dogs though. Not sure if it because they want one and don't want to pay for it. Or if they steal them and then sell them. Either way, it stinks.

Had that happen to a neighbor-very nice German Shepherd. Never found her, and all of us looked for a long time. Sorry for your loss.

Nancy, a few years ago my in-laws, who live in a very rural area, had a dog go missing. It was an older dog, mutt, and not a particularly handsome animal. Not a hunter or cattle dog, just a food processor.

About a year and a half later FIL went down the drive to pick up the paper when at the end of the drive he saw what seemed to be a familiar form. He whistled, and old Sport came bounding up to him. If only he could have talked.

Maybe you'll be equally fortunate.

Sorry to hear that. By all means check your local shelters. We have a neighbor whose dog would wander back and forth between farms. Someone thought he was lost and took him to the shelter without asking around first. He did get him back but cost shelter fees. Also check with local vets as he may have been hit by a car and someone took him to the vet.

No, he's not chipped. He and James had really become buddies.

I miss that silly dog with a body that was too long, legs that were too short, ears that were too long and a bark that was way too loud.

Dogs, specially stray dogs, are a bit like angels.
They show up, help us out, "force" us to love them and teach us how to be happy.
When we're done learning, or they get old, or there's someone who needs their help more, they move on.
If they get to enough people, maybe we'll rescue another angel from a shelter.

That's unusual for a Bassett, most of ours are kind of clannish and don't want much to do with folks outside their pack. Most of my Bassetts we didn't/ don't dare leave off the leash and out of sight for too long, they'll smell something interesting and two hours later look up and wonder where the heck they are.

took a lot of nerve to do something like that , especially If James was within sight of the car.
I'm sure they could have heard the tractor running.

I'd do like others say, check the shelters, maynbe place an add in the paper ?

Put LOST DOG signs along road where you saw the cars stopped, offer reward. Around here it"s usually somebody new thet will give you a lecture about keeping your dog at home or on a leash.

Two vehicles seems as if your dog may have been hit by on. They may have taken him to a Veteranian, as I would do should I happen to do that. Pray that's what happened.

I saw a car stop right in the road and pick up the neigbors dog one time,so it happens.
Another time,somebody had stopped and was walking right toward mine. I had to get pretty agressive with the guy to make him get back in his car.
Hope you find Bently. I'd be sick if Wally came up missing.

the first thing that popped into my mind when i read your post was that someone found their dog that has been missing for awhile. he did come wandering in out of the blue didn't he? just a thought to consider. -john-

That could be, and it happens for a wide variety of reasons, some terrible. But as someone mentioned, maybe, hopefully they took him to the pound. Around me, coyotes don't typically come out or around in broad daylight. They be more naucturnal.

I hope you get him back. We had to put our golden, Macy, down a couple of months ago. She was a car/truck rider. If she were out and someone stopped to open the door, up for a ride she would go, best intentions. We found out when our neighbor, Dan, opened the door to his pickup and showed us. After that, we kept an eye on her. She didn't know no better. To her, the world and everyone in it was innocent and good. I sure do miss that girl. She adopted me, and I let her, bless her soul.

Check the local SPCA, they might've thought he was a stray. More likely he got hit and ran off, it happens.

One time a neighbor was in her driveway, opened the tailgate of her minivan and a golden retriever ran out of the nearby woods and jumped in. Natural habitat for them I suppose.

Years ago when living in Santa Clara, CA, we had a really nice black cocker, "Inky", which was my 8 year old daughter's dog. We kept Inky in our totally enclosed back yard during the day when our two girls were at school and my wife and I at work. We were sure Inky got stolen by people putting in a new in-ground pool at our neighbor's home in back of us. Rotten deal, I can tell you for sure, cops didn't do much about it and the neighbors were sad but couldn't do anything either.

If the car had its flashers on and a second vehicle was there, I'd figure the dog was hit before I'd consider it being stolen. Most times a thief wouldn't want a witness and the witness wouldn't allow the thief to take it. Also wouldn't guess that a thief would bother with flashers. Could've maybe also been a hit or a close call and they couldn't find the dog to see if it needed help. If it was nipped it would've probably gotten spooked and could've run off.

I had a long legged version of your dog (bloodhound) and both breeds are heavy animals. If the dog were hit it could very well be the second ride was offering a hand getting him in the truck / car. Or looking to see if they could see where it went?

I'd certainly call all the vets and animal hospitals in the area. I hope you find him and in good shape. I know your pain. I sure do miss my big old slobber launcher. He could really sing.

Good luck... Keep looking... It's only been a day and if he did run off he could easily turn up just fine.
