On a used tractor with very many hours of use I'd want to test the oils & coolant condition with test kits available from JD dealer. I would look for wear on clutch/brake pedals plus wear on draw bar & 3pt balls.

The 3010,3020 & 500 used a one of a kind, four cylinder version of the Waterloo six. Crankshaft, cam, balancer components are getting scarce and $$$.
The 3020 chassis with the Dubuque engine was sold as the 2520 and is a truly collectible and usable machine.

You did not say gas or diesel. I would not recommend a JD 3020 gas. They just don't run correctly on the newer formulas of gas. I have ran into them lately that you can't get to run right. They will either foul out the spark plugs if set rich or stumble to take throttle if lean.

If it is a diesel them just make sure it is running OK. No major leaks or knocks. Like others have stated there is a balance on the bottom of the block that is ran off the crankshaft. Parts are high and used rare for it. Also make sure the hydraulics are quite and not leaking.

Truthfully I am not a big fan of JD 3020s. I would go to a JD 4010 first. They are about the same money and the six cylinder motor is much better. Also if you can find them the JD 2520 is a better tractor too in my opinion.

I have and use a 3020 gas and have no problems with the gas. I only use BP Ultimate! No alcohol.

Very handy and powerful tractor. Pull a 11" disk, 4 row planter, 7 shank chisel, 7" rotary mower. It is side console and narrow front.
