Gas fire place

Do any of you use one of these? We put a corn burning insert in our fireplace years ago, and now I am toying with the idea of a gas burner, mainly for back up if we loose power. Just wondering if any of you are familier with them..

I have had one since 1995. It really throws out some heat.
Mine is a ventless, and sometimes you get a whiff of propane, but nothing bad.
I have used it as my primary heat for 5 days when we had an ice storm and lost power.
I only have an 1100 square foot house so it did OK.

We have one. It will heat/take chill off the room it's in when fan is running. Of course, no electric = no fan. I wouldn't depend on it for back-up heat, although it's better than freezing. It would have to get REALLY HOT in order to throw heat OUT into the room. Dangerously hot! A "furnace rated" fireplace has ports to hook ducts into plentum. A furnace rated fireplace would heat your house, but still needs electric for fan.

We have a heat and glow GDV 4000. It is a direct vent and a little smaller than a standard one. It is in our living room and so is our thermostat. We run it and it keeps that room nice and warm so the furnace doesnt run. Makes the bed room a little chilly but I think it saves us money. Those units are 80+ percent efficient heaters. It can be used without the fan with no problems. I think the fan was 150.00 so we never bought it.
