how many miles is a 7.3 PS good for?

I just came across a 2000 F-250 that is fairly cheap. Its got the 7.3 and a 6 speed transmission in it, extended cab and 8 foot box, had a bit of body work done recently but looks decent. The kicker is that its got 460,000km(just shy of 286,000miles) on it. Its my neighbours truck so i see it and hear it all the time and it seems to start and run fine even in this colder weather we have been having.

So how far will these things go and what would it be worth in your eyes?

All depends on how it has been maintained. I've seen some with 400k on them but they were also meticulously serviced. Also seen a few that at 150k needed work.

Iv got 182,000 on mine. Tows a trailer 80% of the time. Only needed a water pump, and alternator. I change the oil, oil filter, and fuel filter regulary!

I had a 1994 and the last I heard was it had 498,000 on it. I have a 1996 now and it had 320,000 on it and it runs good. I would be worried more about the trans then the motor. It might need a clutch soon but who knows might go a long time. I trust that motor more then a 6.0 with a 100,000. I have one of those too. Nothing but trouble.

i have a 99 with a 6 speed with 189k on it and i love it its been well taken care of and only had to do minor repairs starter, wheel bearings and such... the body is perfect and i dont think i will ever buy another new truck. My dad has a 2001 f350 with a six speed with 80k and its like new never had a problem with it.. I would buy a 7.3 anyday over a new diesel... Also the 6speed trannys are pretty solid... f350 w/ 4.10's gets around 16 or 12 mpg with trailer. f250 with 3.73 gets close to 20mpg

That engine was "B" tested under heavy duty truck use. that means being worked hard all the time. The HD "B" test shows how many made it to X amount of miles with NO major repairs.

The 7.3 PowerStroke has:

B10 of 200,000 miles (10% failed, 90% did fine)

B50 of 350,000 miles (50% failed, 50% did fine)

I have a 1994 7.3 IDI. It's the last 7.3 built before the PowerStroke DI engine came out in mid-94. My engine is lighter-built. It just turned 300K miles and runs like new. It pulled a fifth-wheel livestock trailer for many years.

To me there is a huge difference between worked hard and abused and in this case you don't know if it either, neither or both. Dealing with a wrecked vehicle of unknown origins with 286,000 miles I would assume both and deal accordingly.

There is a You tube video of a repair shop that tore down their shop truck after it died, IIRC they had about 750,000 miles on it and he was a little upset with himself 'cause for less than $1,000 he could of intercepted the problem and prevented the big bang but they were trying for 800,000 for bragging rights about it. I think they went by powerstrokehelp if you want to look for yourself.

2wd or 4wd?

I'd say 4wd would be lucky to be asking 8k if it's really nice in my opinion, 2wd considerably less.

The engine has LOTS of life left if it was looked after. Keep in mind 7.3 trucks are VERY desirable to a lot of Ford fans. The later diesels are not as appreciated.

You will love the 7.3 6-speed combo, I have 2000 F250 4wd crew with that combo. Geared nice and low for pulling heavy trailer and will cruise all day in 6th on the highway with power to spare.

If it has a new or newer transmission in it then good. If the transmission is original from 2000 then take 2k off the price he is asking. That 7.3 is the IH motor I think.

i dont know, we have a 96 f 350 crew cab 4x4 at the company yard with the 7'3, 300,000 on it, its used hard, and we've been trying to kill it off for 4 years and it wont quit

Along time if taken care got a 99 f250 with 7.3 4x4 needs tranny shift solenoid was hopping to get 4200 the way it sits or 5800 if I fix it just need sometime has 219000 miles and runs good still they are pretty detuned from there potential so they last awhile

I have a 1996 F250, 7.3, stick shift, club cab, 4 x 4, 8 ft box, with over 350,000 miles and it still runs and drives greaat

Being it's a local truck, you have a golden opertunity to find out how it was serviced.

Was the coolant changed regularly ?
With sweet coolant they last about forever. If it is still the original coolant and sour as can be, they develope cavitation holes in the cylinders, leaking coolant.
Those sleevless Ford /IH blocks had cavitation damage problems if the owner was sloppy about coolant maintenence.
