New Idea 318 Picker Grinder Adjustment

My brother has a two row New Idea (#324 I think) with a 318 grinder on it. About 10% of the kernels are whole. He does not have a manual for it.

Can the grinder be set finer? If someone can explain how this unit is adjusted we would appreciate it.

Thank you,
Glenn F.

I've never heard of a grinder atached to a corn picker. With regular hammer mills there are different screens available to control how course grain is ground. Hammer mills can also be run with no screens for really course material - maybe your set up either has the wrong screen or no screen.

If you Google Corn Picker Forum I think you should come up with a website that will maybe give you the answer you are looking for. They have alot of picker knowledge. We used to pick and grind but this year we put a cornhead on the Deere3940 chopper and made snaplage. This will be the first year in 25 years of farming that we did not pick any earcorn.I will miss hearing the ears thump on a empty gravity box.

the 318 was made with 2 rolls under the knives/screen and above the auger, that should crush any whole kernels or pieces of cob that make it through the screen. possibly they were taken off your machine? the rolls run close and there is an adjusting bolt between the roll bearing blocks. my 318 makes the nicest hmec of any machine i have run (unisystem, nh892, nh 2115), just makes it a little slower and i can"t use a dump wagon with it.
