Sometime today in NM, an extreme sports freak (read idiot) name of Bumgartner (SP??) will be skydiving from about 20 miles high.......... So, dick2 and other NMexiconians, watch out for falling nuts.......

He'll probably pass out and won't even know it when he hits the ground. He'd have to drift a long ways to make it over here. I'll just wait for the pics on the news - if they can find enough parts to get a pic.

Reminds me of a guy who was going to paddle a kayak from Seattle to Japan. They showed a pic of him heading out- kayak sure didn't have much freeboard. He didn't even make it out of Puget Sound- they found the overturned kayak in the Straits of Juan de Fuca, no sign of him. Darwin at work.

There's actually some value in what he's doing. Military has what they call HALO, (High Altitude Low Opening) jumpers, and there's a need to have possible escape techniques for astronauts re-entering earth's atmosphere.

That said, this guy is plum nuts. He's gonna free fall something like 118,000 feet before opening @ 5,000 feet.

If you were able to get enough people on a plane/balloon/whatever to shove me out the flippin' door, I'd pop the 'chute as soon as I was in the air. Matters not though...As long as they make runways and step ladders, I ain't jumpin' out of any perfectly good aircraft!

You of all folks should know Dave (LOL), the German Military (Fallschirmjaeger and Special Forces)are doing the same. Also American are experimenting with it. Special suits with integrated oxygen supply and delivery, etc......
Idea is to stay above enemy fire and be able to glide for miles and miles (up to 35 km)without being detected, radar and otherwise....!
Your German Okie Ralph.
BTW: Looks like I will be "home" in May next year...still up for some beer???

Ralph that is being done, at 30,000 feet, Spec Ops have been doing HALO's sense the 60's, nothing new there, even tracking up to 35KM, they may be experimenting with a new suit. At 118,000 That plane is on radar someone is going to know what's up, most civilian aircraft fly up around that 30-40,000 mark. So seeing as spec ops is already doing this what this guy is doing isn't much help to them.......

He has already made a jump that was just under this one I see
no reason why he shouldn't make the jump.

If this is the same tool I read about last week... the goal is to break the sound barrier. I can't imagine the wiplash he's going to have when the shute opens... if it can stop him.

he chickened out...............

Once he gets to a reasonable altitude he won't fall as fast. From 100,000+ feet up, I'm sure he'll have some time to slow down before he opens his chute.

I hear that they are looking for the true dare-devil- Jose Jimnenez !!! anybody rememder him? america 's first astronaut. I still have his records. -mike

My name, Jose Jimenez. I am the chief astronaut of the jewnited states expeditionary force. I am confident they will get me back to earth. How far into it?.......my name, Jose Jimenez!

It's been a while since I tackled the math on this one... but needless to say, if breaking the sound barrier is his intention, he's going to freefall a long way....
This would be a stunt on the edge if you ask me.
