Guys I am in central KY and will be growing winter wheat for the first time ever this winter. When is the latest I can plant? I will only be planting about 15 acres and want to give the crop the best chance I can. Thank you

I think You'd better get it in fast. Temperatures in Indiana around Indianapolis are hitting in the upper 20's in outlying ares Monday morning. Unless the forcast has changed, heavy frost advisory tonight for me. Its probably already too late here!

I figure I've got till the 1st of November to get mine in (NE Ks). Our fly free date for hessian fly is the 15th of October, some guys have had it in for a month, I think a little later planting date makes grain while getting it in early makes straw.

should be fine to plant all month there and maybe even the first week of nov. I got mine in, here in nebraska, but have planted in late oct and been fine. we plant ours after the soybean harvest. it worked nice but it's all in dry ground. we've had 1 rain since june 23rd.

I have relation that live in southern Ohio. They always said they had up to election day to plant wheat. You are 70-100 miles further south so you would have until then plus a few days. The Hessian Flay date in central Kentucky is close to about now. So I would not get in to big of a hurry. Plus wheat growth in the fall has ZERO effect on the next season's yield. Sometime a large fall growth will hurt your final yield.

Here is a link on the UK web site about the Hessian Fly free date in Kentucky.
UK Hessian Fly article.

What does your local seed dealer say about what you want to do i would follow his suggestions as he knows his product and your area.

Winter wheat is very hardy. The benifet of early planting is the bonus of pasture for cattle or deer. If wheat is up and growing before freezing weather, grazing of livestock can last all winter. Main growth takes place in the spring. don't let livestock graze then.

When does the ground freeze hard there or are you where you do not have the ground freeze? Here in Ohio wheat has been planted untill the day the ground froze to much to get the drill in the ground and was as good a crop as the wheat planted on fly day two months earlier. Don't think there will be much wheat out this year around here as getting too much rain to get the soybeans off and be able to work the ground. Have seen different areas with water setting in the beans. If it does get in then it will be just as the ground is starting to freeze but that is after the cutoff date for the goverment.
