OT Foot Surgery-Now I'm getting crabby

The Doc said I'm getting better. He's leaving the stitches in till Tuesday which will make 2 weeks total. It's killing me not being able to do anything though. No weight on the foot for another 2-3 weeks possibly. We were gone most of the day yesterday to the doctor's office etc, I had a slight pain where the long incision was. But I've been off pain pills (vicodin) since tues eve. Was only on them for one week. The simpliest task as using the bathroom while on one foot, putting pants on or trying to tie the shoe on the good foot with out being able to support yourself with the bad foot. Anyway it's only temporary. Some of you wanted me to keep you posted so this is just an update.

I forgot to mention. The stitches are not close to incisions. They found out this makes less of a scar this way. You don't want a scar on your foot. That's the worst place to have one, this is why all the incisions are on top of my foot instead of the side. I have to admit the first 4 days it felt like I had a railroad spike thru the front center of my foot. Not a sharp pain but a dull hurt. I kept wanting to pull my foot out of the protective boot to stop the dull pain.

I missed one incision the last time you posted, he bit you 3 times !!! I'd have to think its quite sore, but then again, there's likely a lot worse things in life too LOL ! One of them not being able to get on your tractor when you need to, and I'll bet by now, you need to LOL ! In any event get well and heal up soon, thought maybe you'd enjoy my experience with this:

I did the same darned thing before hand, had all this wood to put up, kind of wet and frozen, but that's no problem for the ole Ashley to dry out, worked out pretty good, black cherry drys fast, so I pick the driest wood, the heat dries the rest and in a weeks time its good, last winter was so mild and dry I sure wish I did not have this surgery then.

Before photo, it felt like someone stuffed a 3/8 fuel line under the skin, ganglion cyst elongated, doctor says from arthritis, I say it probably did not help to get stepped on by a big ole mare, and the impact of a 18' 6x6 in '06 which fell when I put the posts in by myself (note to self do not attempt this again) for a 20'x 32' pole barn. He had to remove this mass, and trace it to the roots and get all of it so it don't come back and with the way the human foot is, there is a lot of things including nerves, tendons and so on in the way.

2 days in, finally enough power to get a fire going, sat and looked at the pile of wood for 2 days, thats nice..... sure would be great if some of that would jump into the stove and catch on fire LOL ! Well the cooler air downstairs made for low chances of infection, don't mind the wood debris, did not have time to sweep or vacuum, hey, its a man cave with all the trimmings, storage totes, some clutter, a pile of wood, digital cable tv and an old stove guarded by a person not so old by age, but wear LOL !

Ok, 1 week in, had enough of the cast and crutches, thankfully it was not "mechanical" the surgery that is, but he did scoop out degenerated bone matter from my ankle joint, I cannot imagine what was going on with my foot while I was out !

Hope you heal up soon. It is a pain when you have one flat tire,..difficult to get around for sure. Take care and good luck.

THe biggest problem I had when they did my knee surgery was not being able to do things, drove me nuts.....and the worst time of year too, 1st week of June. I had to buy all my hay that year. Couldn't get on a tractor for about 4 weeks and then couldn't use the clutch with my left foot. Was on crutches for almost 8 weeks.

Hope you heal up good.

Billy,
Wow! I have a removable boot but have learned to keep it on most of the time now. First few days I had it off to keep ice on it. Since the pain has subsided I keep the boot on 90% of the time now, I get too brave with out it and find myself trying to use my foot in certian situations and I don't want any set backs. I made it this far (11 days) which seems like two months. Any way glad to hear you're doing better too!

John B,
Hang in there. Gets better day by day. Had surgery on one arm and other shoulder this summer. Hurt like Hades for a while. Now two months later - is much better and can actually straighten AND use arm.

Interesting on the wide stitches... wondered why mine had seemed stitched out very wide. Did not know if reduces scars.

Put on one of your wife's skirts and squat to pee... That'll take care of your two big issues.....You'll be fine.......
If you can set up a grow light next to the chair your stuck in, or at least a florescent, it'll help your mood a bunch til you get back to movin around some....

Sorry Dave......you started it

Its good to be over a week in, and you don't need pain meds. Once you have that much distance from the actual day of surgery, you start to realize the healing going on.

I had local and sedation, well the local was just bizarre to me, I've never had to deal with that before, needles don't bother me, once they got that leg "twitching", was actually a good thing, so they can inject and flood the nerve to numb it if I recall how this works correctly. Then off to the operating table, more sedative, it put me right out, did not seem any different than general anesthesia, 'cept one key thing, its a whole lot better after because though you cannot even move your leg, let alone feel it, it lasts a lot longer and helps you get over the hump, the initial pain. I doubled up and took the pain meds right away, and I had a friend come over for awhile, I was going up and down stairs too! I took the pain meds for 2-3 days, but I read they can "back you up" hmmm, ok that explains something, will leave it at that, I immediately stopped taking those. I do not like over the counter or prescription drugs unless absolutely necessary, so the remainder of those went in the fridge in case they're needed. There was really not much pain, it was sore, some swelling, overall it went well, but over the course of 9 months now, the soreness is still present.

The boot cast is a good thing, the cast gets old quickly, eventually became annoying and overkill. I came in for my follow up with a shoe on, no crutches, ran smack into my doctor ! He looked down at my foot, afterward I went back out with a boot on ! The thing was it was just the incision, and putting weight on it too early may cause it to open, stress it etc. given my circumstances, knowing how I heal, (having been stitched many times before) just used my heel for weigh bearing, gradually started using the foot, and let the tape kind of fall off, I gave it a good head start, nothing do with bones so the doctor said it was ok that I kind of expedited things, had it been different, there is no doubt as to follow the doctors orders for non weight bearing. Theres a lot worse in life than this, I did fine with it, but am facing other surgeries, now my back is sore as heck every morning, you just get to a point and wonder why so many things ache, then wonder how to deal with it in 20 years, best to get repaired now is how I see it.

Considering what they did on your foot, it looks great, the doctor warned me about swelling, but it really never swelled that bad, enough to make a shoe tight at first and uncomfortable, short trip to the store was ok, I took a walk out on my land, even bucked another cord, I seemed to bounce back in no time. One thing is for sure, I am very careful with my feet, don't need to drop a chunk of firewood off the splitter or similar.

Looks like your doing well and on the road to full recovery, you'll have to give us another update at the next mile stone, good luck and best wishes !

Thanks for your story Billy! Yes I know how the meds back a person up. I get very irritable when that happens. I kept eating fruit, lettuce, carrots, apples and cider, oranges etc to help this matter and it did help! The one neighbor lady brought us a pot of chili she made. Bless her heart! Some hours after I ate some of the chili I couldn't get to the bathroom fast enough let alone get my belt undone standing on crutches...LOL!!!

Whadda ya mean you couldn't use the clutch? You had a crutch didn't you LOL! When I had ankle surgery I used a crutch to manipulate the clutch, but it was only with the car and pickup. I don't think my left arm would have been strong enough to handle a tractor clutch. My only fear was if a cop would pull up beside me at a traffic light. Jim

If'n ya had a decent tractor like a Deere, you could have had a hand clutch and wouldn't have had to worry about pushing the clutch in with your foot...(lol)
