First off, I have been working on farm equipment for some time, mostly working for farmers as a farm hand/ operator/ mechanic. I also do all the work on my own equipment an tractors as needed as well as maintaining my parents machinery. I was approached by a gentleman the other day who wanted me to work on his tractor. I went to look at the tractor and he showed me his other "big boy toys". These included a backhoe, 2 or 3 tractors, and some other various farm machines. He wants me to go through everything and fix anything an everything that's wrong. He buys the parts an supplies the shop complete with most tools. I supply the labor an some hand tools. What do you folks think would be a fair price per hour to charge for this type of service? Thanks! Kippster

Will you be working for him or as a private contractor? Insurance coverage rears its ugly head...
That is what kills most side work for the guys I know.
If you can be considered as working for him so you are covered under his workmans coverage you can work for a lot less than if you have to cover yourself.$30-50 an hour would be excellent money then.
We get $90 an hour as private contractors.A few privates charge as low at $75. Anyone charging less is flying under the radar and at their own risk!

I do them off and on. A lot depends on what i am doing the the person is always on hand not matter what or I do not do them. As for cost you have to get the cost of fuel plus so figure $00.50 per mile of driving plus a fair hourly rate which varies depending on where you are

If he has a yard full of machinery he has not taken care of, I"d fix one and settle the bill, before I went on to the next one.

Can you do the jobs as fast as a pro mechanic in a dealership? Or will you have to "find your way through" much of the work.
I would give him an hourly rate of say $35, and then if I felt a repair was going slowly I would shave a few hours off it.
