Broadcast corn?

Corn fields here in Louisiana look like they have been planted (broadcast) for another crop of corn. Thay sure do waste a lot of grain when harvesting. I sometimes think it is because they travel so fast while cutting. The corn doesn't have time to sift thru the trash before it is sent out the back end.

Know a lady who works for Purdue University extension. One thing she does is check harvested fields for grain on the ground. She told me she can usually tell if a man or woman was running the combine. According to her women miss less:)

Could be a BTO useing hired help thAt jut 'drive, drive, drive'.Some of those guys are so big that they just dont care...

There neighbor who ran JD combines seemed to miss more than the guy running Case IH. The red guy said the rotary type did better in corn.

Could also be head loss. Dry corn will shatter off some kernels when it hits the head. I've seen a lot of seed corn ground that gets picked on the ear look like it's been re-seeded. Even 40,000 kernels an acre left is only 1/2 a bushel per acre.

guess were the name green machine came from, before i start something a lot of the time it's caused by the steering wheel holding lever puller so called operator, also bad crop conditions and ones that vary a lot make it hard to keep it adjusted proper

Question? I have noticed in this area thick fields some up to almost waist high. Could this be cut for hay? Anyone do this?

Do the math. 150 bushel corn yield. A 1% harvest loss. (Normal would be in the 1-3% depending on the crop condition). At the 1% that would 1 1/2 bushels per acre. You only plant about a 1/3 of a bushel in the row. So that 1 1/2 bushel spread out looks real bad. The thing is in most years the corn that is shelled and lost will not usually grow. With the earlier harvest this year it is growing volunteer.

It can be with any brand combine. In some varieties it maybe all header loss too. The corn crop this year is a real challenge to do a good harvest in. Weak stalks and a lot of nubbin ears.

So I am not going to throw and rocks at anybody this year. It has been a tough season and it is going to fight us to the very end.

Just kidding. I call our JD 8820 T2 the "Big Green Corn Grinding Machine" so I don't have a grudge about color. If we push the speed it will throw corn right over the straw walkers.

My dad always tells of a neighbor who spent hours and hours adjusting the combine to do the best possible job and then he would fill the trucks to the top and spill a river of corn at every corner and drive fast enough to leave a yellow trail to the elevator!

Here in Louisiana we always get an excellent stand of corn or soybeans behind the combine. We had exceptional yeilds this year-almost all were in the 200 bushel range. Farmers around here are becoming near millionaires off this one crop. I guess the weather has been so perfect here that we just got an unusual amount of sprouted corn and beans after harvest.
