Does anyone have a good waterproof hour meter that I can mount on a bracket for my older tractors. They are all 12V negative earth.

David,
I just purchased a digital one from ebay for $11. Don't know how well it will work. It says all I need to do is put a wire around the spark plug wire and it will give me both the RPM's and hours. This meter is for motorcycles. Don't know why it won't work for my Farmall. I'll post back once I get it and if it works for what I want.

I would also like to know the answer to that question.
I have purchased 3 "Tiny Tachs". They are self contained, and simply take a pulse by induction off a coil or spark plug wire. The problem is they are self contained- the internal battery went dead on my first two at about the same time. The company tech was good enough to give me a discount on a third unit, and he told me how to supply 3V DC to my units, however I couldn't make it work.

Most of these units are built for small engines without distributors. It can be a challenge to get the pickup wire trimmed and placed as far as possible from the dist- to avoid excess "noise" - to avoid wild readings.

Bob,
You may be right. Taking a $11 gamble. If noise is a problem, I'll use the spark plug wire the greatest distance from distributor. Hopefully it will still give me the hours, which I need for oil changes. My RPM's may be off by a factor of 4.

I have a 24 volt hour meter I bought at a government auction on my garden tractor. It works fine on 12 volts been on there for about 35 years. I have a Delco starter/generator and I have it connected to the S/G so it only powers the hour meter when the engine is started. It's mounted under the seat and isn't exposed to the weather plus the tractor has always been sheltered. Hal

Sorry.
I bought them in the past. I looked through a catalog that had some choice. I think it was JC Whitney. Some are round, square, etc. They are apt to be universal voltage too- like less than 10 to 40 or so volts.

David,
I have a lawn mower that's 12 years old. It has a 12v hour meter. Wonder if you could go to a lawn mower repair shop and get a used hour meter from a junk lawn mower?

If you look close at alot of old tractors the guages were origionally made by Faria. That said I have seen more of the old faria guages still in operation after 30 or more years than I have any other brand. Here is a link to their site. I couldn't find the hour meter on the site but a Google search showed that they have a plain. old style, meter still available under part number 12824, or call them with the application and they might offer something else as well.
