I have a 4 row john deere 71 planter, I am going to attach a no till coulter bar infront of my planter bar and move the 3pt to that bar and then weld the planter bar to the coulter bar and use john deere coulters. I have plenty of 100lb suit case weights how much do you think I would need weight wise. Also my 71 planter have the big plate gauge shoes on them that I love because it smooths the ground out in front of the planter could I keep them on the planter when I put it to no till?

too many varibles to answer that. i'd consult my county agent and/or a successful no tiller near where u live with the same type of ground. where i live; i added no weight and use no coulters. having the V adjusted on a john deere is a very critical issue. i moved my down pressure springs into the heaviest setting.
I use an 800 ih air planter and have for 21yrs.

What size tractor are you using. I bought a no till set up this spring that rips in front of the 71 planter units. The outfit I bought is only two rows and it loads up a 55hp tractor. If you like I will email you a picture of the entire set up.

Ours was an earlier JD 7000. I welded weight brackets on each side to hold the IH suitcase weights. I put 4 of the 75 or 78lb weights per side.

This planter also had insecticide boxes in the back. We put bags of sand in each box. Probably 60 lbs or so.

You need to keep the planter colters and furrow openers in the soil, but you also need to watch the drive wheels. At times we had the drive wheels lifting off the ground and that could definately cause problems.

I would be glad to. It will most likely be tomorrow evening. The bride has me doing honey do's for a birthday party tomorrow.

You need about 250 lbs per row in hard clay soils. In lighter soils then you could be in the 175-200 lbs per row. This is total weight. This would include the planter with the seed boxes full. So figure out what your bare setup weights. Then add weight to get to that 200-250 per row.

Here are the pictures of my "no-till" "Ripper" JD71 2 row planters. I think they are in this order:
1 coulter followed by sub-soiler shank
2 Press wheels closing furrow (8 inch wheels with alot of down pressure)
3 Planter units follwoing press wheels
4 Hitch. It is raised and lowered from both the 3pt hitch and dolley wheels.

Sorry the pictures are not any better but it was late this afternoon when I took them.
