over filled tractor differential - 80w-90 salvage ?

So the drain plugs have been out while I have been working on this 850, cleaned the compartments out and so on, while refilling the rear end, I loosened the oil level plug, almost to the last thread, and while filling, nothing leaked, whoa, put a clean pan under that pug and pulled it, probably over a gallon, maybe 2. Funny I did pull the plug while filling, oh well she fooled me and parted me some $$ which I hate as much as waste.

Now the 80w-90 is in a clean drain pan, which was flushed with gasoline, but you know how that goes, but it was clean but it ran in from along the rear housing, so do you think its worth straining given what I describe or is it dollar smart and penny foolish, and just add to the waste oil, and forget it, mind you 5 gallons is $70. If so what would you use to strain it and would you use it in a differential after doing this?

First darned time for anything, but I let it drain, might be a tad high on the level plug, but I would imagine 2 gallons over would cause some kind of trouble, well I did learn one thing for certain, the hydraulic and differential compartment seal seems to not leak LOL !

Sure , save it ! if you store it back in your original bucket, any little contaminants will settle to the bottom anyway , and it's good as new !

Screen it and then save it. Only reason I say to screen it is so if it does have a few filings in it you can catch them. And if you use a metal funnel with a screen at the bottom put a big magnet on it so the filings if any stick to the funnel. Then just pour it into what it came out of

I would just screen it. Old's idea would work if you have a funnel with a screen. The ones made to screen gas will not work very well. I usually just use a piece of window screen. I like the idea of putting a magnet on the side of the funnel. Just remember most things that use 80-90 gear lube are not as finicky as a hydraulic system. So anything you miss will more than likely not hurt anything.

I use these to filter all oils.
Work great. Gets out the big stuff.
Then like the other poster stated.
Let it sit for a few weeks and all the dirt
settles out to the bottom.
pour off slowly into clean container.

I filtered some 80w90 from my car tranny when I changed the clutch and use it as bar oil for my chain saws when its hot in the summer.

I screened it, was nothing in it 'cept bugs cause I I let the pan sit overnight,, thanks for posting the links, I now have a little more 90 wt on hand LOL ! How do you like using that for bar oil ? It seems similar in viscosity.
