Larry, I heard about the JD Sellers Vietnam story. I was wondering if I could have that complete story so I could read it for myself.

I just read it- great story. When I was a kid, my Dad would not allow a can of Spam in the house. My Grandmother would cook some- but not in our house. He was National Guard in 1941 and one of the first to deply in 1942- to an island in the South Atlantic to build an airbase. They landed tractors and trucks on an island with 17 British citizens and a boat load of Spam. They survived by dropping grenades in a bay for fish and hunting for sea turtle eggs. They finished that airfield and moved to Belgian Congo in June of 1942. Waiting for them was a fresh boatload of Spam. And when they moved to North Africa to face Rommel and the desert rats, they had another boatload of Spam to throw at them. He got shot and they sent him home and made him a ninety day wonder. He said it was good to be home and get a steak. In May of 1944, he was redeployed to England, and Spamed to death going across France and Holland. When he came home, he told Mom he'd have to restrin himself if he ever saw a can of it agian.

my wife's uncle apparently was fed mutton in England during the war. We now raise sheep, which, of course, he hated due to the mutton smell. Oh well, bad times and bad food give bad memories. Those days were nostalgic only to those who were not shot at or victims.

My father sailed on the ship Aquitania. They had mutton and beans twice a day. They sailed from New York to Rio to Capetown, out into the Indian Ocean. The cook jumped overboard at one point - had gone crazy. They were heading to Cairo, Egypt and their base in Alexandria. When they got there - the trucks were still sitting in a parking lot in Richmond Va. So they used Italian trucks they "found" along with a German driver they used to translate the repair manuals. Their unit got into trouble for using Italian trucks... but they got the food and ammo delivered.
My father is sitting nearest the back tire of a jeep they used for repair work.
