getting rid of moss???

Have a couple places that I mow that has quite a bit of moss under the grass... Seems to be getting a little worse each year and makes for some ugly hay.....
Last couple years has been dry for growing hay so this stuff really kicked in. Anyone know of a way to kill it without killing the other grass? It's not a big area, but I don't want it to take over....

Thanks, Dave

Moss hates iron. "Moss killer" is available at garden centers, but I just get Ferrous Sulfate (or something Ferric or Ferrous) and throw some around. Turns black and dies.

We get moss on the roof of house on the north side where it doesn't get sunlight. We kill it by spraying it with a water bleach mixture.

Put a large bare copper wire along the ridge to keep the moss from growing on your roof. Zinc also works but makes a mess.

There is a ranch here that had a large area of it, and they decided to burn it. BAD IDEA, it burned under ground for over a months, they had to bulldoze it up to put it out. They are still trying to get the moss killed and grass to come back. It is now like dead pike moss.

could it also be weak ground (nutrients)? Also, when is the best time to put something on it? Now or in spring?

Moss grows best in acidic soil. So you need lime, or if you can get it there, get wood ash from wood fired elec. generating plants. Wood ash also supplies the Potash that your good plants need, so that all you have to buy is your N. I prefer to apply in the fall so that fall/ spring rains wash it in. The custom applicators won't even take their trucks out in the spring around here. If you are growing moss your soil tests will probably call for 2.5 tons/acre.

Moss usually indicates an acid condition in the soil where it grows. You may need calcium to sweeten the soil. Ag lime will work on it over a period of months. Our ag lime is around here 28-35% calcium carbonate depending on the grade you buy. We can also buy pell lime in a bag that is 90%+ calcium carbonate equivalent.

The soil could be too basic too. I had an old lime pile here with moss growing on it. It will grow at either extreme.
