720D Pony motor John Deere

Pony motor starts & idles fine. When the "Run" lever is slid left - it should rev up to high speed, but it is very lazy, sometimes it sputters to nearly stall and needs teasing to get up to what (my ears say) is cranking speed.
I have been tweaking the main fuel jet screw counter-clockwise in hopes that it is fuel starved after a professional carburetor rebuild. New inline fuel filter was installed. Sometimes it spins the Diesel O.K. sometimes it sputters out. Any ideas?

If you put an inline filter in the gas pony motor (you mentioned diesel), take it out. Also, the outlet on the pony fuel tank is almost the same elevation as the inlet on the carb. which doesn"t help the fuel flow. Fill the pony tank and see if that helps.

Is the "inline fuel filter" designed for a gravity flow fuel system? Nearly none are.

Possibly weak ignition. Bad coils / points and condensers seem to be a problem with the little pony motors.

Dear Friends:

Thank you for your inputs. Most comments focused on fuel or lack of fuel flow to the pony carburetor.
However, holding the outlet hose level with the carburetor, the fuel flowed freely THROUGH THE INLINE FILTER at the rate of 8 ounces per 20 seconds.
When I quickly pull the run lever to the left (out of its detent position) it reminds me of the sound of an un-muffled big four barrel carburetor on a muscle car before the engine kicks into high RPMs. WHAAAAAA!!
As I stated earlier, I can tease it up to speed and usually kick the Diesel over enough to start but only if I catch it on the first one or two puffs at full compression. Otherwise the pony loses rpm and dies.

Check out your throttle linkage at the carburetor and the govenor linkage that you set top rev with. Squirt the linkage down with some loose juice and make sure it's very free moving. The spring should return it quick and easily. Sounds like it's not free enough to allow it to hunt out prime spot on its own. Those little screamers seem to need to sort of bounce their way up to ful rev.

I had the same issue and when I freed the linkage up nice... it's worked fine since.
