Van belongs to FIL. Window went down for him and will not go back up. I took the door panel off and see that there are push and pull cables that move the glass up and down. In the down position there is slack between the cable housing and the bracket that a pulley is mounted to. I can get it to tighten, and raise the window manually most of the way, but not full up. Any ideas what is wrong? I have a manual for 88 and older, but they are different. I really cannot see anything that is broken, but visibility is quite limited.
Thanks in advance.

had that happen to a grand prix, had to replace the window regulator slide mechanism on it. The cable wraps up in the spool thing and wrecks it...same prob as you are having...

In MY opinion, those Pontiac window regulators are the biggest pile of crap ever built. I replaced five of them. 3 in the wife's car and 2 inthe daughter's. Both Grand Prix models. Neither drives a Pontiac any more cause I said I wouldn't do it again. My 2 cents worth.

A lot of people don't drive Pontiacs any more, or Oldsmobiles or Saturns or Hummers and the number gets fewer and fewer every year. I had a similar problem with a Honda, the cable had worn into the guide so it wasn't the right length to fully close the window anymore. Bought a new used regulator & motor assembly now it works fine.

just replaced the window track [power] in my nieces 99 minivan,,,the cable was loose and un-did it self so the wondow wouldn"t roll up,,took to body shop that knew what to do,,i bought part for $80, and they charged me $50 labor,,didn"t break a sweat doing any work, done in half a day... that old of year, don"t go nuts trying to fix it your self...

Ive beem installing auto glass for 15+ years. It does sound like its the regulator. All cable regulators are crap and have potiential to go out. If you can get it up w/o breaking glass, block it up w/ 2x4 until getting it fixed. Most fords are rivited in and take a BIG DADDY rivit gun to install.
