I am adding an external oil filter to MH44. Should the oil go inside to outside, or outside to inside?

Its always outside to inside. MUCH more surface area.
Think of an air cleaner, there is a much wider diameter and area on the outside.

If the tractor had a bypass filter on it you will need to stay with that idea. A full flow filter will flow so much that the oil pressure will be affected. a restrictor can be placed on the outlet side of the filter to limit flow so it does not challenge the pressure. I would run it with no external filter, and see what the idle warmed up pressure reads. I would start with about a 1/16" hole in a restrictor and go from there. a full flow filter is between the pump, and the engine. yours is probably not going to be there. Jim

If your tapping into a pressurized part of the oil system and going through the filter before returning the oil to a low pressure area, like directly back to the oil pan, then you will probably need some sore of restriction. Said restriction would be best placed inline, before the filter to insure oil pressure stays where it should in the main line, at all times, wether the filter is dirty or clean. Without a restriction you chance the oil going through the path of least resistance, ((ie the filter)), instead of to/through the components that need to be lubricated.

Now if your somehow putting it directly inline, on a pressure line, then you won't need any sort of restriction. Instead you'll need some sort of bypass valve to insure that lubrication to components downstream of the filter is not lost when the filter becomes clogged.

Hope this helps and good luck.

How are you going to add a system seperate from the tractors original as the oil flow will be restricted by the add on and will flow thru the path of least restriction.

It goes outside to inside.

Inside to outside would explode most filer elements.

Jim, I was thinking the same thing. The motor is brand new on an overhaul. I will have a better indication of oil pressure issues if the filter conversion is not part of it now.
