Does antifreeze and its additives and rust inhibitors wear out due to age or use? I'm trying to figure out how often to change the antifreeze in my show tractor that gets only 2-3 hours of use per year.

Rust inhibitors and corrosion chemistry do end up being consumed doing there job. Many brands suggest their life span. I would recommend 2 years, possibly three if the system is nice and clean. Jim

The anti-freeze is just ethylene glycol with additives. The additives go bad with age. You can buy them to add back in to the anti-freeze. The ethylene glycol part will stay good. If you keep the additive in it you can keep it for years. If it is rusty looking then it is time to drain/flush/replace with new.

Antifreeze can be used without changing for many years.A 2 or 3 year change is wastful and expensive.I test the the mix with a hydrometer and add a 50/50 mix whenever the level drops.I mix my own 50/50.The premix sold in stores is a ripoff. My Ford tractor is on year 24 on the same fill .The mfg sure would like to have you change it every 2 years.Since anything you drain is a deadly poison what do you do with the drainage. It can pollute ground water. How much drained antifreeze is properly recycled?

Ive got a couple that see about that much a year. havent changed it in about 10 years. Freeze point is still good for my area, and just looking in side the radiators, they still look good, no gunky corrosion or anything!

Both. Freeze protection doesn't go away, the additive package that protects the cooling system components does. Antifreeze should be replaced at mileage or time interval.

I have some stuff that has the same antifreeze in it as it did when I got them who knows how long ago. I do top them all off in late spring with some fresh stuff but that is all I do

Working for the Army we tested it and let stay until the vehicle was sold. Could many years never seen one with bad stuff in it.

You can buy test strips for anti freeze and SCA's to add according to how it tests. Fleetgard sells both. Strip part # is CC2602B

I used to use 20 or 22 ounce bottles of rust inhibitor for extending the life of antifreeze. I think the brand was Prestone. After 6 or 7 years the antifreeze would still get cloudy and I'd replace it then.
