Grumpy antique outboard engine

Have a 1964(?) Ted Williams 3HP outboard. It ran last year, but has no spark now. I have renewed the points, coil and condenser but still no spark. There are no shorts that I can see. Only thing left is the stator - what does it do exactly and how can I tell if it is deficient? Hope you know the answer - I hate to junk the motor as it is perfect for sunset cruise with my grandkids in a 1934 Old Town rowboat.

Have had connector on end of plug wire break inside insulator. Can't see it have to peel it out and repair if necessary. Dave

These system use a magnet on the flywheel passing by the coil to create the low voltage to charge the coil. When the points open it create the high voltage for the spark. You say it has sat for a year first I would remove the coil and clean it down to new metal where it contacts plate it is bolted to. Next find out the clearance between the coil and the magnet. This is very critical set the fly wheel on but don't bolt it down now rock the magnet passed the coil until the poits open and watch for spark. Remember any rust in this area can cause problems.

New points that sit around in a cardboard box take on a white film that insulates them.I always cleaned them and check with a ohmmeter.I put new plugs in an old Champion outboard. It ran for a short time then quit.Put the old plugs back in and it ran fine.

Condensers that sit on the shelf for years can be worthless.I test them on a capacitor tester before I use them.

Like Buster Brown used to say on Saturday morning kiddie shows, like Tarzan:

"I'm Buster Brown
I live in a shoe (Buster Brown shoes ad)
This is my dog Tide (sitting next to him panting)
He lives in there too (as I do on that forum)."

And then there was the Howdy Doody Show.....neighbor had a TV, 10" BW table top. All the neighborhood kids came over to watch. The rest of us couldn't afford one. The neighbor's dad was a blue collar worker in one of the local refineries. He had a good job and made good money. My daddy owned a restaurant business and it wasn't a Chili's (very profitable national chain).

For your objective, I'd say do yourself a favor and get an electric trolling motor.

In the 1970's and '80's, I had a sideline business repairing boats and outboard motors. It never ceased to amaze me how people who wouldn't think of driving a 5 year old car would bring in a 30-40 year old off brand outboard that had been sitting in the back of someone's shed for 20 years and then get riled at me 'cause I couldn't instantly produce parts and make it run like brand new.

I apologize for sounding negative, but that's my honest opinion.

some of those engines were simply rebranded johnson/evinrude/gale engines, but some were other brands. if you need parts check either the mfg code,or the serial no code for mfg.others were simply modified techumpseh engines and a lot of lawn mower parts fit(the power head ).if you can cross refrence the mfg code often times you can buy a repair book from the parent company.
