On Saturday I attended the Field Of Dreams auction at Pierce,NE....On the way home Sunday morning I stopped south of Columbus,NE and went for a walk down the Platte River...Its totally dry from the drought and all the irrigation..

Just east of Columbus the Loup River flows in to the Platte..It has water in it..The pictures with water in the Platte were taken south of Schuyler,NE..

The last two pictures are from where comedian Johnny Carson lived at in Norfolk,NE..His family moved there from Iowa when he was 8..

My grandparents lived near Central City, NE, until 1912. Dad used to tell that people that had sheep during a drouth (prior to irrigation lowering the water table) drove them into the Platte River to drown them so they could use the grass for their cattle. Sheep weren't worth anything at the time. He said that he helped drive 2-year old steers to Grand Island and sold them for $3 a head during the hard times.

Grandparents moved to Iowa in 1912 and then moved to ND in 1918.

What a difference 18 months can make. Wonder what that looked like last spring?

1206SWMO,
Incredible photos. Really drives the drought home even more that the dried up fields...a dried up river! Thanks for posting.

I had to go to Burwell and Calamus Lake yesterday.

I crossed the Platte at Grand Island, and there's still a decent trickle there. The Calamus Reservoir appears to be down around 4-5 feet.

I was surprised to see the North Loup River looked pretty normal between St. Paul and Ord. In fact at one point where the North Loup runs parallel to Highway 11, there was a deer wading across. The deer was belly deep, and just as I glanced at it, it stepped into a hole and went up to it's shoulders.

But you're right, the Platte has been completely dry at Columbus for over a month.
