4x4 + 4x4 + 4 - 4x4 = 20
16 + 16 + 4 - 16 = 20

You do the multiplication or division then the addition or subtraction.

Step 1 4x4+4x4+4-4x4

Step 2 (4x4)+(4x4)+(4)-(4x4)

Step 3 (16)+(16)+(4)-(16)

Step 4 (36)-(16) =20
 
4x4+4x4+4-4x4=?

Associativity of multiplication always takes precedence over addition.

So:
4x4+4x4+4-4x4 = (4 x 4) + (4 x 4) + 4 - (4 x 4)
= (4 x 4) + 4
= 16 + 4
= 20

Which any fifth grader knows.
 
Remember bedmas, brackets before multiplication/division therefore (4+4x4)x4 +4-4x4= 68. If I put multiplication before brackets I'd get 56
