New Tire Question

I am trying to repalce rear tires on my Ford 4000, diesel. The current size of the rear tires is 13.6.28.

My question is, could I mount a pair with the size of 15.5.38 on the tractor?

Going from a 13.6X28 to a 15.5X38 means new rims and also the 38 tires are one heck of a lot bigger so you ground speed would increase to maybe something you could not even use

(quoted from post at 14:48:49 09/08/12) Going from a 13.6X28 to a 15.5X38 means new rims and also the 38 tires are one heck of a lot bigger so you ground speed would increase to maybe something you could not even use

Thanks for the info.

Goes according to rim size. Normal for a 13.6 is a 12 inch rim width. Normal for a 15.5 is a 14 inch rim. OK to go an inch wider or narrower using rim width, old size markings on tires. So, no- looks and acts funny.

A friend has a 4000 that came with 38s. I just happened to be looking at them yesterday, they are probably 14.9s. It may have come with special gearing for the larger diam.

I think you missed it. He wants to go from 28 inch tires to 38 inch tires and that would change things very very much and his first gear would be a lot higher then it had been and road gear he might just get a ticket for going to fast

You might be better off going to 14.9x28" tires that would be the same as the "Old" 13x28"..same as came on AC WD-45 tractors..

Ron..

The 4000 (4100 utility type and 4200 row crop type came with 11-12.4 tires standard and could use 12-13.6 very easy but to go to 14.9 that is a very big jump oversize and they are geared different than the ones that came with 28" rims and were a low utility while the 4100 was a high utility type.

It would also mean new centers that could only come from a parts tractor and yes he could have a speed fast enough for a ticket.

I don't know about what it would do on a FORD but I did that years ago on a MF 175. Went from 14.9 X 28 to 15.5 X 38. Low first thru low fourth, just very little difference in ground speed. High fourth, road gear, maybe 2 mph faster at the very most. I changed the front tires from 7.50 X 16 to 10.00 X 16 to level the tractor. I pulled a 10ft disc back then and after going up to 38's, I still used the same gear to pull it and could not tell much difference in ground speed. I did have better traction with the 38's

If you read what he says he wants to go from 28 inch tires to the much larger 38 inch ones and that is a very very big increase in diameter

Approximately 12% Decrease in overall gearing reduction in each gear. (11.9% to 12.45% INCREASE numerically from 13.6X28 to 15.5 38, using standard tire circ. as listed by 4 major tire manufacturers)

I'd also question brake capacity if anything less than in excellent condition.

Never try to do math in your head before 6AM....

Should have replied 8.5% (on average) difference in overall gearing change from 13.6X28 to 15.5X38, based on tire circum. from 4 different tire manufacturers.

I did miss it- was thinking only rim width, maybe the 38 was a typo. Seems like speed would increase more than what the one poster said. Quite a change in diameter.

What 4000 are you talking about?

If you're talking about a round noice 4 cylinder utility tractor... then the 13.6-28 is the correct tire. If you're talking about the same vintage in a row crow... then the 15.5-38 is probably close to the correct size. Probably had a 13.6-38 originally.... and it's got more reduction through the drop boxes on the RC to accomodate those wheels.

If you're talking a 3 cylinder 4000 with double reduction axles.... the 16.9-30 was the correct original tire but a 15.5-38 is roughly the same rolling circumference. There were other variants of the 3 cylinders that used the single reduction axles... and other smaller tires for LCG or low profile work so you'd need to be carefull about changing those wheels unless you want to change the differential.
