OK...................

Now, just where.. (how is prolly the best ??), do you get the seeds to plant seedless tomatoes, apples, etc.....??????????

Guy the wife works with gave her a bag of veggies yesterday.. Couple of the biggest tomatoes I ever say and pretty much all meat (??) and no seeds. Like Andy Griffith would say MmmmmMM! Gooood mator.........

Am curious to hear the answer on this one... always wondered that about seedless watermelon (though they do have some seeds, but very few). So yeah - where DO they get the seeds from?

I never quite understood the whole science of genetics -

I know seedless varieties of fruit come from mixing two genetically different plants of one variety - I think it's like one plant that has two sets of chromosones with another plant that has four - getting a plant that has three sets - and won't create seeds.

When the seeds that will be seedless are planted - they do have to have "normal" varieties around them to polinate with for some reason.

I guess what I'm trying to say is - I have no idea!

But you said it so well!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

(quoted from post at 05:04:25 09/07/12) They're hybrids sort of like a Mule.

OK...Break it down for a dumb guy...

For Joe Blow to grow those tomatoes, he has to buy started plants from a nursery???

Basicly the same as for hybrid corn, the seed you buy would be like the hybrid seed corn you buy that if you tried to plant that crop it would not make anything. Takes the correct parentage. And no I do not think you have to have a seeded type planter for polination. Have Amish friends that are planting the seedles varieties for the local produce auction that has an auction once or twice a week and that is were the restrants and grocers buy the produce they serve or put on the shelf for sale. Sugar Baby watermellon is a big item. One day when I stoped to see him one friend was grafting tomatoes to get a better product.

(quoted from post at 05:18:19 09/07/12) The plants have intercourse out in the garden when knowone is looking, and new sprouts pop up. HeHe.

Do you suppose if ya put out candles and soft music they would be more prolific?????

Rick

You can believe me or not,but the wife picked a tomato the other day, took it to the grocery store and weighed it. It weighed 4 pounds 6 ounces.

ongressional/Presidential material!!!!

P.S. No insult to you intended, J.R.

No - this is the part that confuses me -

They mix two plants - and that plant creates SEEDS with three chromosones (not sure why the plant itself doesn't only have three ...)

So the seeds it makes will grow -

But the plant from those seeds can't self polinate - so it has to be near another similar plant with normal chromosones -

and what they make is fruit with no seeds ...

TOTALLY talking out of my )(#*$# here -

But I think I'm close.

Of course - instead of tractor talk I'm SURE the answer is on the web somewhere ...

maybe somebody less lazy than me can look it up!

You can buy hybrid seed to grow the plants,I've grown lots of seedless watermelons from seed no tomatos but no hybrid seed will breed true to what it was of course thats not an issue with seedless varieties of anything.Almost all commercial varieties of vegetables you buy in a store these days are hybrids.

You can save an ear of hybrid corn. plant seed from it and get corn,Ive done it with sweet corn often. With sweet corn seed selling for 35 bucks a pound its worth doing.
