Kubota's, is it worth it?

Hi,

I"m not going to be able to provide a lot of information yet, but I"m being offered a Kubota B1550 and a B1700, they both run, probably a lot of hours, may have PTO issues (1 I think doesn"t work and the other has the transmission stuck in gear and stalls) not really sure of all issues yet. Both are being offered for $1000. They are I think 80"s models. Are these worth messing with? Is a PTO or transmission a major deal breaker? My thought is to use these for trail mowers.

Any thoughts or opinions would be appreciated.

Thanks

I have a 1550 now and love it. Great tractor for it's size. I would buy another at that price in a heart beat. I'll bet the B1700 is just as good.
Whatever it cost for parts and a little time to repair them will be worth it.

I think you need to get a little better estimate of what might need replacing. Then check to make sure parts are not obsolete.
My thoughts.

if you are ready to pull them down to fix them, It"s probably a good deal IF they are US tractors and not Grey Market Kubotas. Kubota has taken a very hard stance on supporting grey market Kubota"s. THEY WON"T, even if they are identical models. If the dealer determines that you are repairing a grey Kubota, he will generally shut the parts book with Kubota"s blessing. So, get the serial numbers and find out from a dealer that they were sold originally in the US. If they are grey market, walk away or be prepared for a lot of hassle getting parts and offer him scrap value.

I have a an 85 L 285 Kubota parts are readily available but expensive. The tranny is is a simple fix pull the top and check out what is the problem. PTO you have go deep into the trannybwhich could mean a split of the tractor. Get a book they have funny little things that hang up the parts that you can't see. All in all that's a very good price go for it.

I have a B1750HST bought new in 1993 and love it.

The B1550 is early/mid 1990s and about 15+ engine HP. The B1700 is late 1980s and a bit more HP.

Parts are available but can be quite expensive.

I certainly would not pay $1000 for two such non functional tractors without a good deal more information.

The B1700 (if you don"t mean B1750) was actually a mid-late "90s tractor: 1995-1999. If the 4wd, the tranny and the engine are all functioning well then getting it for a Grand and still having to fix the PTO is a deal. We didn"t sell many (never stocked "em) because for a lil more money you could get the bigger brothers; B2100 and B2400 or if you were bargain hunting you usually settled on the B7800 (virtually the same tractor with no Power steering.) The 1550 was made late "80s until just prior to the B1700 started production and was an excellent platform too.

I have a B5200 I bought new in 1987. I often wonder if the parts to maintain this tractor are costing me more than its worth so I sure wouldn't buy a fixer-upper. Kubota is really high on parts. Now in all fairness its been a really good tractor and I have thoroughly abused it making it do jobs I should have had a bulldozer for and its still going.

if you have the skills to go into it yourself its a deal, kubota has good parts support, around here there like cat and john deere, if you break it you call them and they put the parts on the way to you, unlike some Japanese units or china where if you break it you better have a machine shop in the area and deep pockets, you could fix both, sell one and be into the other for cheap,to me its not 'what its worth on the open market" but what its worth to me, i probably have 5 to 6 grand in a ford jubilee, but now its virtualy a new jubilee, runs and works like it should, [ usually] is it worth it in the market? no, but can i buy a like new 30 hp tractor for 6 grand? no,

Is that $ 1,000 each or for both ?
If for both don't even think twice snatch them up you can always sell parts off of them.

Hi,

It is $1000 for both or $500 each. I believe they are both 4wd, may have an attachment or 2.

They are about 4 hours south of me, so getting information and seeing them will take some time.

I'll post back when I get more info.

You tell me. I attempted to replace the hydraulic cylinders on the front loader and they wanted more than $300.00 each. I only paid about $1600.00 for the entire front loader. Tractor supply sells similar cylinders for under a hundred dollars. Then I tried to replace a rotten seat and they wanted $250.00 for a simple seat. Years later I bought a better seat for less than a hundred dollars. Then also for the front loader I needed some pivot pins for the bucket so I ordered 4 and when they got the pars it I found out they were $50.00 each. The only other tractor I've bought parts for is a 1959 Case 210b. As best as I can tell the parts to restore it were comparable to car parts however they were mostly aftermarket parts and not CNH parts. I did buy a small John Deere tractor one time but it didn't last long enough to buy parts for. The tractor had a transmission problem the dealer refused to fix so I ended up giving it back to them.
