With smaller varieties, it always seems excess water, as its just expansion cracks, but I believe if there are cracks, and the tomato has other problems like rot or similar, could be another cause, might need calcium.

Too much nitrogen, you get lots of green growth, maybe no flowers or very little, another calcium deficiency I believe, I also use epsom salts per the instructions on soil use, good to have PH right, and N,P,K levels right too. Tomatoes grow like weeds in my garden and I have full size plants that just came up, from seed early summer and they will be just in time to produce, amazing plants that usually don't call for a lot of work.

We used to sell tomatoes and other garden stuff at the farm gate. Grew around 2000 tomatoe plants each year. When you buy your seed, you can check to see if it is prone to green shoulders , cracking . VM wilt, ect. Some types will split right after a good rain that follows a prolonged dry spell. Hope this helps you when picking your varietys for next year. Bruce
