Lyle, those ARE nice looking oats. From the size of that grasshopper you got more problems then just that bear. Are you allowed to shoot bears due to crop damage?

lyle, i dont re call your locale .??. we dont have bear problem here in south , ind, but we have turkey and deer galore,.

Lyle if I were to attempt to grow oats like that I would probably gather up at least a couple hundred elk, I've a few in my alfalfa, but they'll find oats from miles away.
It's been over 20 years since we've been able to grow oats for grain.

I always wanter a BEAR SKIN RUG. Many year back when i came home from Nam we stopped at Anchorage and at the air port there was a polar bear skin run for 54 bucks i had 52 .

Several people planted oat here in the Upper Arkansas Valley, (Salida, CO)but with the lack of water the grain didn't come on. They will cut it for hay or disk it back in the ground For "N". No problem here at the farm with Bears, but major problem in the area this year with them.

The last time i grew oats(50 acre) i had 5 bears in there when i came to cut it. I figured they had flattened 7 acre. Bears got to eat too,but 7 acre!
I gave one of them lead poisoning  , the other 4 took of like bats outa "ell.

m from northern Alberta. My crop of oats are not doing to bad considering I did not use any fertilizer. I couldnt afford that chit this year at 900/ton

(quoted from post at 05:33:15 09/06/12) Bears are a pain and really can tear up a crop especially sweet corn, get a couple Livestock Guard Dogs like the Great Pyrenees they hate bears.
eah,and then you buy dogfood for these critters yearround that cost twice as much as the crop the bears destroyed
Never mind all the other costs asociated with big dogs.

Apparently you never owned a Great Pyrenees and they also will protect any and all livestock on the farm.A couple calves killed by coyotes will buy alot of dog food and of course bears or coyotes once they get started killing something don't stop on their own accord.Bet you don't farm either
