Picked up a makita drill, driver, and light set a couple years ago. 14.4 volt, prolly got a deal cause the batteries were already old (even tho they were new)... Anyway, FF and the batteries don't last long and the drill chuck is a real PITA (slips/comes apart). Was looking for a couple new batteries and ran across this 18 volt set with 2 batteries and a charger for less than the price of 2 batteries.....It's no wonder people throw stuff away and buy new....
Would you buy new makita batteries and new drill chuck, or just get the new set (replacement batteries are cheaper also)?

Guy at work has Porter Cable an doesn't like 'em, not enuf
power even with the 18 volt. I've had 18 volt DeWalt for
years with no complaints.........

I've had bad luck with all these contraptions, mainly cause of batt troubles.
And like you said replacement batts are more expensive than a complete new unit + you got new warranty.
No wonder people chuck things out.
Its a throw away world

Cars might be next

I have a cordless set, sawsall , circle saw, drill and flash light. Ryobi 18 volt. Had em about 4 years now with the Lithium batts. I gone through one batt and they have worked well. Granted they are never going to work as well as plug in stuff but I don't expect them to.

I got rid of my Makita stuff because the batts were so expensive.

Me personally, I have not had any luck with Makita batteries, but this was 15-20 year's ago. Might be better now, or not. Tools themselves were ok, but the batt's not so good.

I have a whole set of cordless screwdrivers, here is a few and my cordless drill!

I found it was cheaper to buy a new drill set
(drill, 2 batteries and charger) than to buy 2
batteries. t work budgeted the $120 every year in
my tool budget and if I shopped carefully I could
get the drill for $110 so I could buy drills or
bits too!

I have just about every cordless tool DeWalt makes. I have built many houses with them and they continue to work. All batteries go bad but I feel the DeWalt brand batteries last a lot longer

I like Milwaukee myself. But if the makita
batteries are the ni-cad ones that have old style
round cells inside they are not that hard to rebuild
for much less than new. A web search should turn up
plenty of vendors that offer the service.

You poor soul throw those craftsman screw drivers away and get some professional ones, you will wonder how you never did it before. Try catspaw for a nice screwdriver for the money.

I used to be a big milwaukee guy, but it seems most of their stuff says made in china anymore, last cordless from them burnt in a year. went to snap on impacts and drills, expensive as hell but you can tell they are heavier and they have good rebuilding service just in case. Unfortunately they don't have the neat things like a porta band.

My son gave me a well used DeWalt drill. When the batteries got tired I was able to buy a new drill with 2 new batteries for the same price that 2 new batteries would have cost.

I pay $89.99 for two new DeWalt 18 volt batteries. Although, I have never seen where you could buy this set-up for that price.

When that battery dies and you decide to replace the whole tool, save the old one, tear it apart and wire it up with a cord and a pair of aligator clips and keep it in you "other " vehicle. They will all work on 12 volt and do a good job.

The purchase of one battery Nickle Metal Hydride at 2.6 AH is pretty much 3 times the battery of NiCad. I own two 14.4 Makita drill motors. I just purchased two Chinese Nickle Metal Hydride batteries for 25 each. They were 2.0 AH, but they are operational. They aren't perfect, the fit is So So, but for 50, they work. Jim

(quoted from post at 18:03:41 09/01/12) Dave, for the price you pay for cordless tools they should put a cord on them

Now that's funny!

I love my cordless stuff even if I gotta have extra batts when I'm working hard.....I really do try to avoid that.......

Actually I have a corded 1/2 and 3/8 drills for really heavy duty stuff plus both a circle saw and sawsall.

After looking at the price of 2 new batteries I asked a clerk if she had any deals on a drill with 2 batteries. She took me to a display away from the tool dept.99.95.Drill ,2 batteries and charger. The new battery cases are put together with screws so I can open and replace bad cells.Old battery had glued cases.Home Depot. My son was at Lowes looking at nailers,They had a deal on a nailer with a FREE saw included.Son gave me the saw because the bushing was worn on the saw I am using. When our freezer died we found prices a high as 529.00.Lowes had one for 429 but only floor model on with some dents.Offered it for 350,I said do better, saleman came back with 325.Next day we bought one for 370.Another Home Depot had a 10% off on all major appliances. No dents.

I have some Snapon cordless tools great tools, good batteries and the batteries can be rebuilt by a company that makes them better than new.You get what you pay for.

I have the same porter cable drill, came in a set w/ circular saw, sawzall, flashlight and 2 batts. The connections in the sawzall are bent and tends to mess up the ones on the batts. Very heavy w/ the ni-cad. I only use millwalkee at work (sawzall, drill and caulking gun), but you do pay for millwalkee
