Ford 4000 wiring

Hi,
I am new to owning a tractor and have recently acquired a Ford 4000, 12V, diesel, 3 cylinder model unfortunatley the battery is not charging, a voltmeter shows 12.5V and does not change when the engine is running. Most of the wiring has been removed; no lights, ignition light etc. There is a wiring cable going to the alternator/geerator with 3 wires but only 2 are connected, the 3rd is loose. I would apprecaite any help or advice on where to connect this spare wire and if this would allow the battery to charge. Thanks Pete

I'd remove the alternator and take it to NAPA or some such parts store- many of them can check alternators and can tell you how to hook it up.

It would help if we knew what wire of the 3 isn't conncted.

Need to know the make and model of the alternator.

pictures are worth 1000 words.

If you look at the top of the page you should see FORD. Try threre too.

Thanks for your reply unfortunatley I can't find a make or model for the alternator but I have taken a photo showing the wiring. I hope you should be able to see it from the URL link below. Please let me know if you need any more information..
Appreciate your help
Pete
