Pasture finds

No pictures, but I was out checking cattle last night and found a puff ball growing out of the ground that was bigger than the gas tank on my 4 wheeler. Never imagined they grew that big. So big that everybody that's seen it can't even guess what it is.

I thought that was a great find, but then tonight I topped it by finding a new heifer calf. I knew there was one heifer that calved last year that hadn't calved again, and I thought from my count that there should be another cow to calve yet,but couldn't for the life of me figure out which one it was. Figured I just must have counted something wrong somewhere. Guess not.
Awful late now to be getting a calf to wean in the fall. Suppose she'll have to stay on mama til mid winter.

rrlund,

Congrats on the new calf. One of mine calved a couple of days ago - it's always a blessing to see a newborn.

It's a very different thing between Tennessee and Michigan. I let my bull run with the herd year-round so I have calves born every month. It's no big deal for me to have calves born now - I just leave them on momma for six months, wean them for a month, and then sell them. It's hotter than blazes in the summer down here, but the milder winters sure are nice.

Getting to the stage where I need some of those mild winters, are they transportable?? I would like to order a few.
I have the hot summers.

Are you going to eat the puffball? We really like them and it is always a treat to find one, especially one that big.

I leave my bulls with cows year round. It is true that sometimes a summer calf has problems but I think the extra calves are the way to go. My neighbor separarates the cows from the bulls about the 1st of June. Has anyone done any research on this subject? Roy

I like mushrooms Zach, almost all kinds, but have never found a way to cook
those big puffballs that I like. Care to share?

Found several while mowing the last hayfield. Some were larger than softballs. Hit several mature ones, and the hay "smoked" for a minute or more after passagee of the sickle bar. Mother used to slice the nice white ones, and fry them in butter. OK, but not my favorite. Came to an end when we cut one open and found it full of maggots!

Its a big mushroom that grows wild here.

My grandmother had a way to cook those puffballs into deliciousness. Many fond memories of the opening day of squirrel season as a kid and I would take my haul of dressed squirrels (and almost always found a puffball on the sway) to Grandma and her eyes would light up and then mine would light up later when she made squirrel pot pie and fried puffball on the side. Sure wish I would have paid attention to her culinary skills because I'm afraid they're lost now. All my attempts to reproduce it fail miserably.

ya step on one and they 'puff' out smoke looking stuff. heard they are good eating but never had one. we get then in pasture but dont grow to big with the horses around lol

A friend of mine gave me half of a giant puffball he found. I knew we wouldn't use all of it so I cut it in half and gave half to another friend.

His wife cut it up and put it in spaghetti sauce. When he walked in to the kitchen and looked in the pot, he asked her why there were marshmallows in the sauce.

the only mushrooms I ever ate other than the ones you buy in the store are the ones that we used to find on cowpies & man what a high !!...course that was 50yrs. ago & after a 1/5 of gin..LOL.....Kent in Miss.

One in a great while used to find them. Was told to never even touch one because theywere poisionus and just touching was bad.
