was it worth it??

saw a post below that asked the question is it worth canning tomatoes, they are cheap at sams club, It made me think of this story I would like to tell, Just below where I have the big garden a lady almost ninety lives in the old farm house , she has lived on that farm all her life . ,When I started planting the garden above her field she told me she liked watermelons,so I tried planting some Just last week I started picking some ,a bunch of them rotted, and some were ok,but small,I thought to myself it wasnt worth it,I could buy a few cheap, and better looking than the crappy ones I grew, but I took them down to her house along with some tomatoes,She came out on her porch and said watermelon, thanks, and just the right size for one person! I think if you offerd her 100 dollars for those measly watermelons she would not take it, This weekend I picked some crimson sweet and took her one and she told me how good last weeks were, I walked away thinking ,,,yes it was worth it!!!

Larry
She liked your effort as much as the produce, that was more than worth it I'm sure, your a good neighbor

There's a reason for everything, and a special place for people like you Larry!
Yes, it's worth it!

We ran out of home canned tomatoes a while back. Wife got a couple cans of storebought ones. They were BAAAADDD! Definitely worth it.

It means more to me,,she tells me storys of how she farmed the whole farm with a 9n,her dad had a full time job so she did most of thr farming. She still puts coal in her furnace for heat, and has an outhouse, and she is in darn good shape,so I think I have benifited more by knowing her

In today's society few people realize the importance of associating with older folks. They can share their knowledge and experience and younger generations can help their elders understand this fast paced world, IF they would just take the time. Larry, you are a good neighbor.

Concerning the question, "Was it worth it?" Some years ago a friend at work and myself were discussing our gardens, especially our tomatoes. A co-worker overheard and asked, "Why go to all that trouble, when you can buy them at the marked just as cheap?" I answered, "Well, if there is a bad season, there may not be any at the market, and"---My friend finished it for me, "There just ain't nothin' like a home grown tomato!" And as someone mentioned already, Commercially canned tomatoes are nothing like home grown and canned.

And the other part too is what else would most people that garden be doing? Watching TV? A fertile productive garden plot and the skills to put it to use is a valuable asset and one of the best 'insurance policies' one can have in my opinion.Plus the hogs and chickens appreciate
the extras that aren't up to snuff. When I have 10X more of something than I can ever use I can give some away use the best of the best.

Yes; & Heres why!!! I KNOW WHATS IN IT! I dont have to worry about that at all, & I can control how much salt, & other ingredients are in it. I can tomatoes without salt, or other spices, & it tastes wonderful to me. You can go anywhere in the world, & get tomatoes; but You will never be guaranteed they werent grown downhill from a Creosote treating plant, or a nuclear waste site no matter what they tell You. + its the ability to say I did it. 10, 20, 30 + years from now You will look back, & be very happy You did. I am only 41. I didnt appreciate it enough as a kid; but I really do now. Fresh mellon now, Potatos on the way in a couple of weeks, A freezer stuffed with corn. I dont regret anything I grew this year, & neither do the relatives! I carried 200 gallon of water in 5 gallon buckets every week for 8 weeks during the record heat this year, & dont regret it. Neither do the relatives whom are given vegtetables From the bounty!

everybody has to do something,I have never had the opportuinity to play golf, but I think I might like the garden better than golf, and you can not eat a golf ball!

Larry, I always enjoy your postings but we"ve all gotten spoiled to you pictures along with the text. I hope you don"t have to wait for Santa to bring you a new camera. May God richly bless you and your family. Rick

I grow a lot in my tiny garden, and I like the taste of the things out of the garden by far than what I have to buy in the store. There is so much more flavor and you have the satisfaction of knowing that what you are eating you grew and preserved.

City feller was visiting his country cousin, observed his garden and asked, "What do you do with all this stuff?" Cousin answered. "Well, we eat all we can, and what we can't we can."

Really, when I worked in the Hawaiian Islands, pineapple produced for that company were from the Island of Lanai. Del Monte had a huge farm in the island of Molokai. Obviously Bananas come from the Caribbean area into S. America. Oranges from Florida, California, or Brazil. Strawberries, Peaches, and Blue berries from California.

So what comes from china? Oysters, canned at that? Yuck oh! But they are not fruits. I bought a can once and almost puked just upon opening it.

I tried golf for years. Finally accepted the fact that I was never going to be good at it. Gave my clubs to a guy who was mentally handicapped. He loves it and is way better than I ever was. I guess everything works out.

Go to your local grocery store and look at the Dole labels. Not all Dole fruit is packed in China, but there is alot of it.
