This afternoon I needed some paint and was on my way to the paint store and a lady yakking on a cell phone ran a stop sign and drove out in front of me. I was far enough back all I had to do is slow down a little if she had kept going but she stopped dead in front of me. Before I could come to a complete stop she puts it in reverse and backs out of my way and backs into another car coming up to the stop sign. I never saw her put the phone down through the whole thing. She didn’t hit the car hard but I heard her make contact.

LOL I saw a teenage girl riding a bike on a state highway this past week while texting. Can't cure stupid.

I was running down I-40 in Oklahoma a while back and seen a guy on a motorcycle texting. A little further down the road I pass two semis, one driver was texting the other was reading a book. I told my wife texting is getting so bad they need to treat like drunk driving. Spend a night in the tank without the phone, maybe they would think about what they are doing.

A few weeks ago I had a customer have a tractor hit by a car. Teenage girl texting while PASSING the tractor on a 2 lane road. She didn't see the tractor turning left. Tore the front axle completely off a 4020. I think we had around $3500 in fixing the tractor. Plus the girl didn't have insurance. Luckily no one was hurt. People need to realize that driving is not the place for using a phone at all.

This morning on the news, I saw a woman carrying a baby while texting at a train station and walked off the platform and fell on her face on the tracks. I didn't see what the bystanders did, I assume they rescued her and the baby. Looking from my vantage point, I thought saving the baby and leaving the stupid woman laying would be the thing to do, but I am sure, that would not be my thoughts if were there.
She may have one a "Darwin Award".

Last year I saw a 60+ lady put her Prius at a 45 degree angle with in her lane on I96 near Brighton Mi while going 85mph. Traffic was going the posted 70. She never slowed down but kept swerving and taking up two lanes, sometimes swerving through all three lanes. All while on the phone. I wish I had a dash cam for it.

I think they should make Cell phones so they don't work if engine is running. I have been about run over at same intersection about 10 or 12 times. I have Cell Phone but keep it turned off when driving. Cell phone doesn't work at my home and I live about 2 miles south of WV second largest city. Cell phone coverage is "line of sight" Makes it hard on signals in these Hills.

How dare you suggest that something that would save more lives than condoms be made mandatory?????? Next thing, you'll want bubba to get a ticket if his taillight is out or pullin an oversize/loaded trailer with his vega....
Last thing we need is someone tellin us what we have to do....

Pretty much get it covered guys??????????????

I think your idea is doable easy enough... But could be overrode... You can set a GPS so you can't fiddle with it while the vehicle is moving...

I believe it's an addiction to the phone regardless of male or female..... Flat out against the law here and enforced with a hefty fine and/or loss of license, but you still see skads of people driving with a phone jammed to the ear... Hard to say who is worse, Americans or Germans.....

I know a big rig driver. That killed a kid that was texting. Driver said the kid never even looked up. Kids car drifted into his lane from behind another rig.Took my friend six months before he could get behind the wheel. No amount of telling him,it wasn't your fault. Did any good for a long time. A year later and he still has problems with it.

There will always be people that can't walk and chew bubble gum at the same time but that doesn't mean we should make that illegal, or impossible to do.

Think about this. The law enforcement officials that would be tasked with enforcing a regulation such as tis have a computer setting in the middle of their vehicle, they have a radio they have to listen to, and I'm sure several other distractions that take their attention off the road. That said there is no way to teach someone the skills needed to do these things and I'm sure there are just as many cops out there, percentage wise, that have done dangerous things while on their computer, radio, etc as there are people doing dangerous things on while talking on a cell phone.

Look at it another way. When one person does something stupid dooe it mean that the whole population should be forced to suffer for their stupidity? I mean seriously who thinks that your old tractor, that never had a ROPS, should be forced to be retrofitted, or scrapped, just because some idiot somewhere rolled his and got killed? That's the same kind of thinking that applies when someone says that someone did something stupid so now a new law, regularion, etc needs to be passed to prevent it from happening again.

In the end it all comes down to what comedian Ron White is so famous for saying...."You can't fix stupid.."

I didn't realize I was going to start a cell phone debate. I thought is was just funny. I know a lot of people that are quite capable of driving and talking or texting but there are more and more that are not. I'm sitting here right now partially crippled because in 2009 I was slowing to make a left turn and a lady texting behind me rear ended me. She only had liability insurance with 21st century insurance and they won't pay for an operation that would fix my arm. I'm having to sue the insurance company and its still in litigation.

Mucho money is made on these things, and it is now a part of some people's body. No one buying or selling wants the statistics- like- if the medical industry kills more people than guns, do cell phones and texting kill more than that? Brain cancer is being mentioned alot too. The engery used around the planet to recharge billions of these devices is out weighing other engery saving programs. The driving world will go back to the 1980's.... few in either camp want to hear hat...

My neighbor got rear ended a while back by a young kid who was on his cell phone. Like was posted on here some time back, "Im for a law that prohibits doing anything but driving while driving"

Nowadays people can type in and text a message something akin to the old days of telegraph and Morse code, they can leave a voice message for someone to hear later (like a telegram could be left) and like my son said "Heck someday technology is going to advance to where a person can call another and hear their voices and talk together in real time" Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm

But Dave2, you are from the great state of Ohio where you are required to wear a seat belt in your car, but you can ride a motorcycle without a helmet!

My daughter's boy friend went to Subway, in her car. Turned in to the parking lot, right in front of another car. He was texting, while driving, while turning in to the Subway, idiot. Totaled her car. She has since kicked him to the curb, thank goodness.

"I know a lot of people that are quite capable of driving and talking or texting but there are more and more that are not."

I personally don"t think anyone can drive and text safely; too much attention is being spent on the texting!!
Some people MAY be able to talk on a cell phone and drive competently; Law enforcement officers seem to be able to use their radios while driving.

What about the concept of "PRESENCE"? Many things in life REQUIRE you to be attentive to what is facing you at this very moment. Now I can see that you may want to share some experiences with friends and loved ones, but for your own sake and for the respect and safety of others, please do this AFTERWARDS. Nothing is more annoying than someone talking loudly on a cell phone in a restaraunt, movie theatre, and yes, even during church service. I am thinking back to the discussion yesterday about what constitutes the "middle class".

Law enforcement officers seem to be able to use their radios while driving.

around here they talk on the cell phone all the time worse than anybody else

I'm one of those people that can't use a cell phone while driving so I turn it off before I get into the car. More often than not when I get a call in my remodeling business I start picturing in my mind the problem my customer is having and somehow the road and the rest of the world disappears. My son on the other hand drives while texting but somehow he hardly looks at the thing while texting. He doesn't take is eyes off the road more than a split second from time to time. I guess after a while if your good its like typing you don't look at the keyboard to find the letters. Somehow he is able to do this and keep up with everything around him and the conversations with others in the car.

You make a post about someone getting in an accident while texting but then try to justify that it's OK for your son to be texting while driving because he has super powers or something? I think it's only a matter of time for your son. It only takes a split second for an accident to happen. What's even more astonishing is that you're partially crippled from someone texting and fighting with an insurance company. Here's your sign...

Baling hay yesterday, side road next to the field. Young girl, early teens maybe, riding a small bicycle and talking on the phone. went up and down the road a few times. She wasn't around when I went out with tractor and baler. At least she was getting some exercise,

You should have dropped a dime on him Texting in a big truck is ileagle so is useing a cell phone with out hands free.

You don't have to outlaw cell usage in autos, just take away the automatic transmission, power steering and power brakes. Then they'd HAVE to pay attention to what they were doing. Sell it as "green" because it would save gas also.

What gets me is those who enforce the laws openly breaking them. In NY only hands free, NO texting, wear seatbelts, helmets (oh wait.. I havent seen any motorcycle cops in long time) and speeding.
