I have seen original rusty or faded tractors at shows that have a dark, almost wet look, but are dry to the touch. I"ve rubbed oil on them and got that look but it doesn"t last and obviously leaves an oily surface. What would be the best thing to use? Polyurethane?

Don't know what they're using, but they used to saok things with diesel fuel before they sold them. Seems like especially combines. I saw a guy walking around with a hand held sprayer on sale day spraying things. Stuff that belonged to him I assume.

We also thought about trying to "seal" our rusty Regular. We decided not to do it, because we are concerned that a sealant would eventually bubble up or peel off just like happens with paint.

If you find something that works well, please post about it.

Old neighbor of mine coated everthing he had (except the wife) with Linseed oil. But there are two processes for it - he would not use the boiled.

kornfused,

Did the non-boiled linseed oil stay wet and oily then? Or did it dry to a hard finish? Thanks.

eventually dried - I am not sure I would say to a hard finsh. When i poured a slab of concrete (where I keep the tractor) he had me brush it with Linseed within a week of setting up. I have to admit, it has sealed it well. He put it on all his equipment.

OSPHO will do that...its a rust killer and leaves a black finish if you rub it down.

Hi Sweetfeet, I'm going to try something called fluidfilm. It's made from lanolin. Don't know how it's going to work, but I'll keep you posted.

RegulaRog,

Please do post your results. I would be interested to hear them, because our Regular will sit outside year round. It will be a "functional lawn ornament". In winter my husband will replace the good parts we have purchased, (large and small gas tanks, carb, magneto, etc.) and the the non-functional originals will be put back on just for looks. Come springtime, he will put the good stuff back on for the summer usage.
