I hear that EHD is wiping out WT deer in NE.
Any of you guys finding a bunch of dead ones?
They say you can't open your windows in the eastern side of the state because of the smell from the rotting bodies.

Doesn't seem to be any evidence of it here in southwest Iowa. Maybe the disease will migrate? 8)

It is The very rare ESSEX HI-(crop-tri) Directional. This machine offers greater visibility of animals and wild game while farming.

They say it's going on here in Michign too,but I haven't seen any. They claim it's mostly near water. Along rivers and what not.

Usually only a small area affected - not widespread. Spread by small insect which niles to be near water. Reportedly an outbreak in Michigan.

Seems that most deer that are diseased or hurt will migrate to water. Allot of the deer in Kentucky that have died from blue tongue were often found in the water. Maybe for the same reasons as the EHD.

Easy to see why one would prefer to use the acronymn (or technically, the initialism) for this affliction.

I have been wondering if we should expect it in our area too. The reason why I say this is due to the dept of conservation advising against deer feeders because "it concentrates the deer and encourages the spread of disease". It seems likely that the absense of water is concentrating the deer!

I read Midges are responsible for it - the deer die by the water because much like cattle that get fever, they head for water.

We had in our area a couple years ago. Really took the population down. In the eastern end of the county, some streams and ponds had hundreds of dead deer in or near them.

I think they discovered that CWD, chronic wasting disease was spread by a protozoon found in the saliva, which would make sense if you had a pile of corn in a bait pile. Don't quote me on that but I'm pretty sure that's what I read somewhere.

Makes me wonder if a hunter was going to bait if a spreader would be better than just a pile.

The smell of the carcasses is coming from the 2 dead per mile of highway. Am north of Omaha, and not heard of any EHD. The deer I see almost daily look pretty healthy and clear a 4 barb wire fence with ease.

Friend of mine in Muir found about a dozen dead deer down by the water. Must be the Maple river or Stoney creek. Another guy found 7 over by Middleton. We still seem to have about 500 every square mile over by Ashley so I hope some of them start kicking the bucket too. We have had more deer damage this year than any year so far that I can remember.

If you Goggle EHD in NE they have a detailed article about it. It has hit the hardest in the eastern side of the state. Lots of dead deer. The report says it is being reported as far west as Lake Mac, so it is wide spread.
We get isolated cases here in Pa, but nothing like they have. Makes me wonder if I should still go there for the rifle season.

I live 20 miles south of Omaha and 3 miles from the Platte river and have not heard of it. The deer are still thick in the rock quarry a couple miles away
