I bought the pickup for a beater 4 years back from a coop, it has the 7.3 and a auto tranny that I had rebuilt 14k miles back by a reputable tranny shop. It had been wrecked and the steering column was worse for the wear. I've replaced it twice, first time the column from the bone yard was similar but the wiring didn't match up quite right. Now on the 2nd replacement and did fine for 6 months, a couple weeks ago I started having off and on trouble with it starting with the switch but could get it started by jumping over the solenoid. I figured I get around to replacing it soon, then the problem went away for a day or two...then it started dying at idle but would start right back up...so I thought fuel filter. Now the sucker cranks but doesnt start and my wait to start light doesn't come on when I turn the key. ALSO it will crank in neutral.
I plan to start with a solenoid and have read about the safety switch on the transmission case, which I plan to try adjusting or replacing. Anyone have any experience like this with one of these pickups?

Only trouble like that I've had was a bad fuel pump relay. Cranked ok but would not start. But it was a gas 460. Not sure that applies to your diesel. HTH, Pete

Before you do anything else.....

Take that cover off under the steering column at the dash (unless you got skinny arms and a lot of patience).... And maybe the metal column hanger (hafta play it by ear)... Your ignition switch is just above that on the passenger side of the column with two 10mm (?) screws. The holes in the switch are slotted. You'll most likely find that the screws worked loose and the switch slid a little.Just put it back where it works right and tighten the screws.

Good luck... If you's big and a smoker, you may wanna find someone with a little patience to do it.....

If this is a tilt wheel column the issue might be E9TZ3e715B it's the yoke that operates the
igntion switch rod. Pot metal & they break...

he says it cranks so its not the ignition switch or anything in the column. the fuel heater reply is a likely cause, also look at the glow plug relay/module as they had a habit of the terminal melting off and it would do that.
