Farmall F20 questions about numbers on pedestal

Looked in our Markle Farmall Bible... could not find the answer. Thanks if you can help us out. Please excuse me if my terminology is not correct.

On a Farmall F20, what do the numbers mean on the front pedestal casting (the part that the steering shaft runs through down to the axel)?

For example .1.13.F. versus .3.13.F

Do these numbers indicate what style of cover should be over the steering gears? You know, the kind of cover that is smooth all the way around - versus the the type where the bolts for the cover run up through a bumpedout "turret" (for lack of a better word) and have a nut on the top end of the cover.

Or is style of the cover for the steering gear deteremined strictly by the serial number of the tractor?

I think you are looking at the the casting date codes, 1 would be January, 13 would be the day and the letter would corospond to a certain year, I don't remember what year F is but it should tell somewhere in your book. Hope this helps. Chuck

Hi Sweetfeet, Those are casting codes. 1-13-f = january 13,1936. 3-13-f = march 13,1936. There is a casting code chart in Markles Bible.

XFARMA,
Thanks much. Will take another gander at it - was looking before 5 am, was not real awake.

RegulaRog,

Thanks, so much. I see the casting code letter chart now - in the general info area. I was looking strictly in the F20 section.

So will have to read both sections to see if I can determine if our 1936 should have the smooth or "turreted" steering gear cover. If I can't find it... may be back to ask the question.

I think you're right in the borderline area where they changed from the roundtop to the castle top. I think Markle's book may give the serial number that they made the change at. Or at least a date.
