Looking through my phone bill. No bells or whistles just basic line.

Total phone related charges - 14.58
Taxes and government surcharges - 14.16

Total - 28.74

Gotta go back and check but something in the Taxes and government surcharges went up almost 5 bucks......

Wanna trade? Mine a few months ago, nothing special, over $72. Average is in the low 60s anyway.

I think they are trying to wean everybody off landlines, I kept my number, but changed to a cell phone, it was about 2/3 the cost. Same company.

Something just don't seem right with those taxes. I have Verizon Freedom Essentials, with DSL, Caller ID, Voice Mail and can call anywhere in the 50 states with no extra charges (tolls). $59.00 a month.

We have 2 lines, one for the modem and the other to receive political and sales calls.....at least that's about all it get's used for anymore.
Here is a break down:

Line 1:
Caller ID with anonymous call blaock $9.25
Residence line $17.00
Total for line 1: $26.25

Line 2 (the modem line):
Residence line $17.00
Total for line 2: $17.00

Total Voice Service" $43.25

Taxes, Fees & Other Charges:
Federal Excise Tax $1.80
TX State Sales Tax $3.89
Cost of service surcharge: $.08
Texas Universal Service: $1.86
9-1-1 Equalization Fee: $.12
9-1-1 Fee $1.00
Federal Universal Service Fee from 07/03 $2.17
Federal Subscriber Line and Access Recovery Charge: $14.95
Total Taxes, Fees & Other Charges: $25.87
Total Due: $69.12

And your complaining. If I didn't need the modem I would dump both lines. I suppose I could dump the main line and save $26.25 but then I'd probably get charged some stupid one line only Federal tax too.
Now I've got to go see what the heck that $14.95 Federal Subscriber Line crap is about. Why don't they just call it what it really is, a bend over tax.

Agree with you. My bill has taxes, surcharge on the tax and tax on the surcharge and franchise fee & tax on... and on & on.

I wouldn't complain. Mine is almost fourty seven dollars a month. I use it only for internet. I hardly ever use the phone. May may make a long distance call once a year.

Landlines are a thing of the past. At one point when I was working stainless and had 2 lines and an 800 number, $200+ phone bills were common. I held on to the one landline for 2 years after she left just so I could tell the random caller "she doesn't live here anymore". I just use my cellphone now. That landline was costing $37.50 a month All were taxes and fees with no calls made. Verizon told me 2 years ago I could not get high speed internet because we didn't have fiber optic on our road. They said it would never happen as landlines would be gone within 5 years. So I went with satelite internet.

Did ya ever wonder what would happen if we all canceled our home phone line all at the same time ??? Most of us have a Cell and i know i could serve with out the computer for a month or so and also cancel the Direct TV and DISH along with the cable co's. I think we would have them over paid exc.'s jumping off buildings the gov. would go broke over night and we would have a few buck in our pockets for a change.Just like IF everybody took a week vacation at the SAME time and did not drive at all bought no gas or diesel. Just for one week. Here again the Gov would not get any taxes and the oil co. would not know what to do with all the excess fuel . Now before this happens i would have to stock up on some barley pop so i could set back and enjoy the time off.

I have Verizon 3G service for my Internet service works though the cell service. And I have Magicjack for phone service it $3.00 a month and no long distance cost.
I got tired of paying taxes for a phone that you could call across town with. We use our cell service a lot out here in the country. If we all went to this system we could put the phone company out of service. And get rid of all those wires that hang over us.

Just be glad you don't have Windstream. They don't send out bills. You don't know what you owe until you get the disconnect notice. Then when you pay your bill. They cut your phone off. Good luck getting service when you need it.Took them four days to show up and install my service. Well really five days if you count having to come back and install. The DSL service. That I requested two weeks before.

I have Windstream for land line.If they dont get payment posted by due date charge late fee,owe one rite now. Get mostly robo calls. Son calls on it once a week. Have Clear for internet.they have phone to I guess, sell at United in Abilene. Have Tracfone for mobile service works some places and some places doesnt.

Landline keeps getting better here, tho I really dislike my phone co.

Need to do a few things and call them, can get phone, 5 meg internet, and 70 or so channels of TV for $100. Nothing else gets me phone or internet like that. G3 is spotty to my understanding, and Dish & Direct are both having cost/ lineup problems from what I hear.

Don't think they have any legal right to charge a late payment fee.My Coy charged me that fee twice which I refused to pay, I asked them what I was entitled to for paying early, No reply. I now don't get charged any late fee.

That's one of the reasons I dumped mine Errin. They also put charges on my bill from other companies. I finally called them and got rid of it.

Errin, I hear you. I have the similar frontier package in Indiana. My bill is like yours, maybe cost a little more. Tax, Tax, Tax, Tax, &more Tax. Will it ever end? Not a member of TEA, but feel like I'm Taxed Enough Already.

I have to keep my land line for internet service.

My Kids have smart cell phones for internet, then complain their phones are junk.

I have a verizon cell. My country home is in a verizon dead zone. There are a few times I get voicemails days later. So what good would having just a cell that does everything do for me?

I'm green with envy.
They charge me
36.80 basic service
.18 for touchtone line
5.30 federal subscriber line charge
.56 911 fee
.30 state recovery fee
.92 federal universal service fee
1.59 texas universal service
4.15 in taxes
10.46 AT&T Long Distance line charge

Total $60.26

Land lines ARE NOT A THING OF THE PAST, if only had one phone it would be the landline, cell not dependable enough. Had verison and switched to jitterbug, a lot cheaper and my plangives me 50 minutes a month and never reach more than 15 minutes. I only want a phone only, no camera in it and no computor either. The cell is just for emergencys or while on the road, otherwise everything is thru the landline.

Aren't you lucky.... Try our phone service just for schitts & giggles. Basic service without long distance, inc tax, $86.10 a month, courtesy of Windstream, and aided by their having a total monopoly on the business in our immediate area. Add another $29 per month for mediocre DSL service, and $49 per month or $3.30 per call (plus minutes) for long distance service. And for something else to gnaw on, "long distance" is anything outside our county. And you get to sign a 2 year contract or you don't get service.

I haven't had a land line in a few years. In the boonies there aren't any internet options (I don't want a crappy dish for that) so I use my cell as a hotspot for the computer. It works just fine for searching tractor parts and looking at the news. I don't have time to watch a video or anything on the computer. What's the point of having all that when I spend all my time outside?
